Windows 10: Should I get Antivirus?

Discus and support Should I get Antivirus? in AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security to solve the problem; I decided to stick with 360 Total Security. So far no complaints. 360 TS doesn't detect some common viruses WD does. Discussion in 'AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security' started by Ditendra, Dec 8, 2016.

    Hi there

    1) NO A/V program works 100% -- as others have already pointed out - if it did we'd all be using it.

    2) SOFTWARE can't in any case protect against totally stupid USER actions so use Internet safely, don't open strange email links and never reply to things where people want info to update Bank accounts / tax systems etc etc

    3) If using torrents don't download things like .zip/.rar etc files. For Music / video download only the proper mp4/mp3/flac etc codec files - then the music / video application will only play if the files are OK.

    4) Again with Torrent sites use magnet links too instead of the actual torrent file.

    5) I think WD is as good or as bad as all the A/V programs - personally I think for home computers WD is fine - anything else is just a load on the system and probably as about as effective / ineffective as the standard WD.

    6) Always have clean regular backups -- if you DO get infected a CLEAN RESTORE will inevitably be FAR FAR quicker than messing around for often HOURS with Virus cleansing programs which can't be relied on to cleanse the computer 100% anyway - especially if the computer you are running the software on is infected in the first case.

Things like Macrium are FREE -- a typical restore on a modern laptop computer can take as little as 10 - 15 mins against SEVERAL HOURS messing around with several passes running A/V cleansing software.

Have a Happy (and Virus Free) Xmas everyone.

    Cheers

  3. Which ones? In tests 360 has about 10% better detection than WD, WD is usually always the last in the world.

It performs great against ransomware even without Avira and Bitdefender, though Bitdefender helps.

    Should I get Antivirus?

Agree . No A.V program is 100%.. Ive been careless over the years and WD just wasnt enough. Then went to Avast Free and was happy customer and also used M.Byte Free... And i use to be a firm believer of Never Pay for a A.V. program.. But times are changing and free one's are getting to the point of not using.and hard pressed to say if their better than WD.
I had gotten a bad virus a few times in the last year and Avast free boot time scan rescued me.. BUT i have lost interest in avast to. Its going in the path of A.V.G. in my opinion. and other's..
So with with some research i decided to give Norton Security Deluxe a try. BUT even with that you have to be careful and turn off- Norton identity safe extensions and Norton home page , and Norton safe search for chrome... If not it be like using the ASK Tool bar.
Oh and were i was careless with. It was with the Torrent sites

I've been using Norton for years, along with Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware All are the paid versions. I've never had a problem yet with any virus infecting my machines. I also don't use Torrent sites ....EVER!!! Take Care and hope you are having a Great Christmas too. *Smile

  6. In that case, you do not even need AV, you are a safe surfer. Then again better be safe than sorry. It is all about a risk management, I have nothing to loose, I have not used AV nor a firewall for years, it improves performance. *Smile

I would never recommend anyone to not have any protection on there computer, I've always had programs in place for protection. But how a person protects or does not protect their machines is entirely up to them. *Smile

What an extraordinary statement.....for someone who regularly gives an opinion on different AV efficacity.... REF your post #16 for example.....perhaps its not been your opinions you have been posting, but the result of what others think.

To advise that one does not need to have at least Defender and a Firewall is rash in the extreme, why do you think M$ regularly issue security updates, even they need to keep on their toes trying to beat the hackers.

I can only assume you have partaken a little too much of the amber liquid during this festive period.

Best wishes to you and yours on this joyous occasion.

There is a virus on usb sticks that creates a folder with no name (blank spaces) and moves all root contents there. Then it creates an .LNK file on root that points inside that "noname" folder showing its contents but it installs a trojan when executed. There is also another file inside the "noname" folder with a funny naming scheme that is also a virus.

After removing the infection you have to manually relocate all your files to the root folder.

This virus isn't detected by Qihoo 360 TSE. I have tested it a lot of times.

    Hi there

    @OldMike65

It's OK for some people in USA to say "Never used Torrent sites" -- but if you are stuck in the middle of winter with only some hideous Russian TV program with Finnish subtitles or church services to watch I think you might have a different perception of the reason why some people access some of "those sites".

I'm happy to PAY for content - but just too often it's NOT available and where I am never likely to be anyway -- maybe Hollywood etc should look at a business model whereby people can INDIVIDUALLY pay for content rather than going all out for the incredibily ineffective "Blocking sites" -- which never works, gives Govt a bad name and just makes the whole issue even worse.

Even currently in the UK where I believe they block around 1,000 (or more) sites !!! -- even more than CHINA !!!!!!! it took me exactly 11 secs to show a friend using Virgin Media how to access the site flying "The Jolly Rodger".

My post wasn't actually to comment on the rights / wrongs of accessing these sorts of sites -- merely to say that if you do then how to do it safely.

    Anyway happy Hols

Can't believe how WARM it was yesterday in London -- had Xmas dinner OUTSIDE in his garden !!!! no heaters needed either !!!

    Cheers

  14. Did your computer get infected while using WD? If yes, how many times?

  15. a small suggestion, try Norton 360. its an excellent anti virus program. monitors all internet actions. its essential that you have protection against viruses. -especially if you use the internet on a daily basis. in 2008, I forgot to update mine and got bombarded by 450 viruses. spent nearly 350 dollars eradicating them. never again.
