    I've had this ASUS laptop for less than a year and it's occurred to me that it's causing its own internet problems, because we have several other computers in the house, and none of them suffer from constant internet slowdown/droppage.

    Usually what happens is, i'll try to go to a url, and it'll randomly decide to take forever to connect. In these cases, sometimes it connects, and sometimes it times out. And during these periods (or when I'm not looking) the internet connection might just drop altogether. So I'll keep trying to diagnose and fix the issue, and it'll keep telling me it can't connect at all, forcing me to open up cmd and type ipconfig /release + ipconfig /renew to make it work again. If I don't, I get no internet whatsoever.

    I got sick of doing this every ten minutes to every hour, depending how stupid the machine feels at the time, so I looked up the problem and found another solution was to manually set the ip and dns, which i did. And it worked great after that...for about a day, and then internet kept dropping even more frequently or outright refusing to connect. Back to the diagnostic tool, which told me "DHCP is not enabled for "Wi-Fi"." It would offer a fix, and I'd apply the fix, which would undo my manual setup of the ip and dns.

    Guess what that means? I go right back to the constant internet droppage, which gets solved by manually setting up the ip and dns, which causes eventual internet cardiac arrest, which won't go away unless I apply automatic fixes, which repeats the cycle over and over.

    I'm centimeters away from breaking this thing in half over my knee. What's wrong with my laptop's internet capabilities? Also what more info do I need to share in this thread? The router is a Netgear AC1900 and Cox is the provider; neither will change because it's not my house and not my internet service, so it's not my call to change them.

    The recent update is slowing down my computer!!!!

    Since the windows 10 update on the 1st of September, my laptop has being unusually slow it takes forever to start up and is also messing with my internet connection, i have to constantly restart the laptop in order for it to connect to my internet.

  3. Allow me to permanently disable windows defender

    Windows defender constantly keeps my disk usage for my laptop at 100% - if windows defender is running or on in the background in any state, my disk is at 100% usage. (the Windows antimalware service)

    Obviously this has severe repercussions of my laptop being slow and unresponsive because the disk is being used up by something else, along with shortening the disks life.

    disabling it in the settings only disables it for a "while" and it automatically turns itself back on after a period of time.

    allow me to disable it permanently - for some reason I don't have permission to change the service to disabled despite being the admin and only account on the computer.

    Im sick of this because my laptop is nearly unusable for a good 2 minutes after turning on/waking up because of windows defender. and even then is still slow to do things.

    (system and compressed memory also take up a pile of disk usage as well)

    Welcome to the forums, You could give this a try, if you like but I can not guarantee that it*will cure the problem as I haven't tried, but worth a try:Access Denied

    If you GoTo PCHF System Scans and run minitoolbox and wireless.exe scans and post result note the wireless test you must right click and run as administrator

    I have the same problem here. Two Windows 10 tablet/laptops (one from Lenovo, the other from Acer) will drop their wifi connection constantly. The network environment seems not to affect the issue as at least Acer drops the connection with other Network as well. Usually troubleshooting wizard helps (resets wifi adapter), sometimes reboot is needed, sometimes the issue goes away by itself after a couple of seconds.

    During the network problem, the available networks (SSIDs) are listed normally, but no data is really sent to network.

    I tried brummyfan's suggestion first, and so far haven't noticed any connection issues. I'll give it another few days to be sure before I mark the thread as solved.

    I wanted to try taking the laptop apart and checking the wires like you suggested a while back. However, I want to remove the battery to reduce the chance of shocking myself or damaging the electronics with static. But the laptop is an ASUS A555D and there seems to be no manual for it online: i found what claimed to be the manual for this model, but clicking it took me to a manual for a different computer altogether. I found one other thread about this laptop model having unstable wi-fi, but they were a linux user, not windows 10 user.

    Does anyone have any idea how to remove the battery for this stupid laptop model? And/or if this model commonly has wi-fi problems with a common fix?

    I'm not sure if it matters but I noticed your adapters lease time is one hour, when I checked mine it's always 24 hours

    That's a new development. How do I change it? I see screenshots of a menu that lets me change it, but I don't know how to navigate to it.

    I'm not sure if it'll fix anything either, since the problem is internet dropping and my having to deal with "default gateway is unavailable" several times an hour.

    EDIT: I HAVE noticed, however, that it seems to drop every hour, at around the half-hour mark (1:30, 2:30, etc) so you might be on to something.

    It's a PDF file. Looking at Page 18/19 indicates one has to take the bottom cover off, may have to disassemble more of it, really not for the faint-of-heart. I've done it but have to allocate sufficient uninterrupted/undistracted time to get it back together.

    The first link works, just doesn't display correctly on this forum, has been an issue for quite some time seen on other folks' postings.

    Thanks guys. What about how to change the lease time on the adapter? I don't have a clue where that setting is on Windows 10. Netgear AC1900 is the brand and model of our router, if it makes any difference.
