Windows 10: Sick PC, multiple faults. Software or hardware?

To cut a long story short my computer is now a brick, or potato etc etc *Sad

It's stuck in a continuous blue screen death loop.

I'm getting multiple fault messages, to name a few :

Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart"


IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL


PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA (Wdf01000.sys)


SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED


storport.sys


ACPI.sys

I didn't record them all as there seems to be a new one on each boot. I think at this stage that my motherboard is faulty, I hope I'm wrong and you guys can suggest something windows related. Here's what I've done :

First step I took was to attempt to restore windows to a restore point before the last windows update (On 2nd March), before I can even select the date the machine brings up a fresh fault/blue screen, I can't proceed. (That's if I'm lucky enough to get as far as the recovery console)


I started looking at hardware, as the case is small (Corsair 380t) and the GPU is in the way, I started there. Removed GPU and ran computer on the onboard graphics (Same issue) Removed and reseated ram (Same blue screens), tried individual sticks of ram in each slot (Same issue). Cleared CMOS by bridging the pins (Did not resolve the issue), removed battery wire and plugged back in. (It's clearing ok but still getting blue screen loop)


I completely unplugged it's Samsung Evo SSD (This is where windows is installed) and I'm still getting blue screen loop?


I've tried a fresh install of windows via the same method as the first install, via USB drive. Won't work, blue screen loop. Plugged in my USB DVD drive with a DVD copy of windows 8.1, the drive is picked up in the bios perfect but once the message to click any button to load/install windows appears, when I hit a button it fires me back to the Asus boot logo and then blue screen loop.

Hopefully my spec's are viewable. The bios runs perfect, but the second I exit it it's blue screens all the way.

Power supply is a EVGA Supernova 650 W Gs Gold 80+ Modular. Hopefully the rest of my spec comes up, if not I'll post after.

Edit: To confirm, the PC ran perfectly for a few weeks without issue. There was no new software added around the time of problems arising. Also I can't get into windows at all, anything outside of the bios and I get blue screen on a loop.

Thing is guys,every replacement handset i get is a reconditioned unit,and they all have faults,im sick of trying to explain myself to their useless customer services,im still kicking my heels with software v10.065!!!

I tend to agree with Ashlyn, chasing all the minor and obscure errors and faults is an impossible task since everyone has different software and interactions. I only worry or try to adjust the multiple errors and faults, I take one a time and now for
the most part my Win 10 64 runs error and fault free all day, only have minor bugs on restart or startup.

 

So many different BSODs are a general indicator of hardware related issue. You are suspecting the motherboard, and that possibility cannot be nullified. But, we cannot test a motherboard itself.

Make it sure that the RAM is not causing the issue. Test your RAM modules for possible errors.MemTest86+ - Test RAM Run memtest86+ for at least 8 consecutive passes.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.
Take a camera snap of the memtest86+ window before closing the program. Let us see it.

6 Passes in and no errors, it's still running at home while I'm in work. I dropped Asus support an email and got a very quick reply, they recommend I return the board to the supplier for a replacement.

I've had a few DOA's in my time but never a working board suddenly go faulty, especially without doing any tinkering to it *Smile

Just can't believe this, brand new board arrived, installed and same faults *Sad To say I'm gutted is an understatement. And now I know I've sent a perfectly good board back to Amazon (Or Asus) with zip all wrong with it.

Pulled out the power supply, check connections etc. Not sure what else to try

Whats left? CPU? Could I have a faulty 6700k?

 

Done an online chat with Intel. They think very possible that it could be the CPU but that I shouldn't be running the ram at 2666mhz as this will possibly cause the CPU to fail? Said it should be set to 1866mhz.

I hate sending anything back when I'm not 100% that it's at fault, but I guess I've no option

Made changes in the bios for the CPU to run on 1 Core and it now boots into windows perfect *Smile Ok now it's good to know that I have basically confirmed a faulty 6700k. Once replaced I'll be constantly waiting for it to happen again *Sad

It seems that you should run the RAM at 2133 MHz.

 

Thanks for the reply, yes that's the correct ram. I've now set it manually to 2133 MHz.

Typing on the broken PC now, running away happily on 1 core *Smile I had the CPU packed up ready to be returned, but thought I might aswell boot her back up and have a look in the event viewer. I can't say I'm overly familiar with the event viewer, but I was expecting to see more errors. Perhaps all the BSOD's aren't being stored. I've a handful of Kernel-power 41 ( The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly) When I say handful, I've had 5 in the last 7 days. These are the only critical events.

I've done a quick search and people with this code seem to be getting random reboots and system freezing etc, typical that I had none of that. The PC ran perfectly stable yet one day it decided not to boot and go into the BSOD loop.

My power supply was bought at the same time as the CPU/Ram/board, it's the EVGA Supernova 650 W Gs Gold 80+. I could be wrong but I'll presume it's not the problem. A failed CPU is probably quite rare, and I hate sending back items that I can't be 100% sure are defective, but I guess I've not much choice *Sad

New 6700k arriving Tuesday so we shall see *Smile

 

A Kernel-power 41 is not a BSOD, it is an abnormal shutdown. Even if the electric switch is turned off, it will cause a Kernel-power 41. It may be, or may not be accompanied by a BSOD.
Was there any Error level events in the event viewers? BSODs are recorded as error level.

Get the replaced CPU, and then see how the computer runs with the changed RAM speed.

 

OP please let us know how the replacement CPU goes.
I have a pretty much exact setup to you and this problem has been going on since January for me.

I found that bumping up the DRAM voltage to 1.28 with this Memory helped minimize the crashes. I rarely get them now, but they still come around once in a while.
I would love to know if a CPU replacement fixed this for you as I'm hesitant to send mine in without knowing for sure that's the problem.

 

New CPU arrives tomorrow, fingers crossed. What really has be baffled is that the system was always stable and then all of a sudden it was unusable and wouldn't boot, very strange. I removed the old CPU this morning as I was using it on a single core over the weekend (Ran all weekend on 1 core and not a mute out of it). Checked the bottom and there's either a burn or bit of corrosion on it.

I'd need a magnifying glass to know for sure. It didn't wipe off anyway *Smile, I knew the old CPU was being collected for return so I didn't have time to look much further.

I've updated my bios and I'll be sure to keep a close eye on everything when the new CPU goes in. If indeed the new CPU fixes the problem then I fear it may well happen again. The CPU is normally the last thing you would expect to fail, this is my first in many years of building. Somethings not right but I've no idea what.

 

To keep the thread updated, as I know how frustrating it is the find a thread via google etc that dies off without a conclusion (You won't get that with me).

I'm extremely unlucky as far as I can tell. The replacement board had 2 pins missing, right about in the area of the burn/corrosion marks as pictured above. I now have a 3rd board. I actually videoed removing the board from the packaging and getting a good close up of the pins. Not that I expect a problem, in fact Amazon have been fantastic in regards to returns. I'm just glad I didn't risk the new 6700k into the board with the missing pins or I'd most likely be back to square one. (Glad I spotted them also)

Tomorrow I have some nice braided cables arriving for the PSU, so going to install those along with the new board/CPU all in one go. Fingers crossed on my return I'll have good news
