Windows 10: Sidekick 99 on Windows 10 pro January 2020

Installing Sidekick 99 on Windows 10 pro for the hardcore user.


Problem- The installation fails at startup with an error that a previous installation must be removed and the computer needs to restart.


Solution- This solution still works on January 31, 2020.


1. In File Explorer, create a TEMP directory > copy the files and folders from the Sidekick 99 disk to the directory.


2. In the TEMP directory, open the Disk 1 folder > find the setup.exe file and right click on properties > change compatibility to WinXP sp3.


3. In File Explorer, use the 'search' box to find file- wininit.ini - right click to rename it to wininit.old. There will be numerous warnings from Windows.


4. Run the 'setup.exe' in the c:\temp\disk1 folder that you previously created.

Thank you for your quick response. Sidekick 99 worked great on Windows 8.1 on all our computers; we received no error message when installing Windows 10 (Sidekick 99 was already installed on the computer - I have tried reinstalling from original disk,
but it made no difference. I can find no "Compatibility" tab on the Sidekick program - where else could I look for it?

 

Sidekick 99 on Windows 10

I upgraded to Windows 10 on October 28, 2015, but am unable to open Sidekick 99 on our Samsung series 5 ULTRA notebook computer. I had previously upgraded to Windows 10, then restored to Windows 8.1 because I couldn't use Sidekick; a compatibility test
on Microsoft's site before I went through the upgrade process again indicated I would have no compatibility issues with Sidekick 99. We have used Sidekick 99 and its predecessor for many years, it's now holding almost 2 decades of calendar history, all our
contacts, past travel information, and memorial records of all we knew who have died over that time - we want to continue to use it. We see from other comments that it does work on some Windows 10 applications - how can we get it to work on ours?
