Windows 10: SKY GO - edge, IE11 and silverlight What a dogs dinner of a mess

What a DOGS DINNER of a mess -- SKY GO is still using Silverlight for DRM - however it's deprecated in Windows so sooner or later IE11 won't work with it. Edge of course doesn't work with it, and the non Ms browsers seem randomly to work or not work.

This is NOT an Ms problem though -- surely SKY could use similar DRM / Copyright protection to NETFLIX etc - since the ANDROID application works without any problem whatsoever they must be using something other than Silverlight.

I only suspect that SKY would rather get people to sign up to their SKY Q service -- it's fine but not very portable if you want to watch on a laptop instead of on a small tablet or smart phone.

If Ms would RETIRE Silverlight completely then SKY would be forced to fix SKY GO for their customers !!!!

I suppose the words Customer and Service should probably be removed from the English Language or relegated tp a History archive as it seems with pretty well ANY service one subscribes to there is just about ZERO customer service available any more.

Problems watching Sky Sports football

There is no IE12. The highest version is IE11.

If you have Windows 10, you now have two web browsers built-in. One is new and called Edge and the other is IE11.

If you having trouble with watching Sky Go, then it is probably because Sky Go uses the Silverlight add-on which Edge doesn't support. To get around this simply use IE11.

IE11 can be found by searching for Internet Explorer from the Search
box at the bottom of the screen. When it appears in the list of search results either select it (or right click on it and
Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar to make it easier to access later).

If you haven't yet installed Silverlight add-on, it is a free download from Microsoft here:

Tip - If you are in Edge and viewing a page that needs Silverlight, you can switch to Internet Explorer by selecting the 3 dots (...) near the top right then
Open with Internet Explorer.

compatibility issues are always on the agenda, given that rs3 builds are going deeper into underlying code
I suspect we may see improvements further down the line, at present I am getting hints that Edge is not fully compatible yet..

- no doubt, there will be more on this subject in the coming months..

 

I'm not a technical guy but I feel the big problem is MS keeps changing. Moving the goalposts all the time. So we get an issue. Many services do not want to change so fast whilst MS pushes forward relentlessly. Hence we get so many problems, incompatibilities and bugs. It's six of one and half a dozen of the other. Me, personally, I don't like the change. What worked yesterday I want to working tomorrow. But I guess this is what we have here with Sky and MS.

 

MS has promised to support Silverlight for quite some time because there are many companies that have invested in it, and MS doesn't want to leave them out in the cold.

 

When I choose to watch SKYGO whilst in Edge it automatically transfers over to IE.....what happens if and when M$ decide to ditch IE, thus making Edge their sole O/S.

Personally picture quality on my desktop and laptop computers watching SKYGO now is HD standard compared to earlier broadcasts which then were just basic picture quality.

 

MS won't be ditching IE for quite some time (probably 10 or more years), because it's the only browser that supports ActiveX, which many corporations have huge investments in. This won't go away anytime soon.

 

Just an FYI

Looks like NOWtv (owned by Sky) are publicly testing a non silverlight version for Windows
This could lead to the same things happening with SKY GO
