Hello Skype Insiders!

We’re glad to announce that with this update you now have the ability to archive conversations in Skype! Thank you for all of your feedback; we've listened and made some changes we think you’ll love.

Here’s how it works:

1. You have the option to archive a conversation from…

The chat list item menu. (Right click or long press on a conversation)

The chat settings within the conversation profile

A keyboard shortcut for the conversation open

Mac: [Command] + E

PC: Ctrl + Shift + E

2. A conversation will remain archived until…

Something that would've caused the conversation to move up in the chat list happens (example: new message is received, a new person is added to a group, etc.)

You search for the group conversation or contact and select it to open it

You go to your contacts list, find the contact for the archived conversation and select it

3. You will still be able to use search to find messages in an archived conversation

4. When a conversation gets archived from one device, it will be archived on all devices

We have a couple questions for you and we would really appreciate your feedback on them.

We’re still working on providing an option for you to see all your archived conversation. Is this something that you would find useful?

End-to-end encrypted Private Conversations for Skype Insiders

We know extra protection is important as you share sensitive information over Skype so we’re excited to announce the preview of end-to-end encrypted Private Conversations, available now for Skype Insiders.

With Private Conversations, you can have end-to-end encrypted Skype audio calls and send text messages or files like images, audio, or videos, using the industry standard Signal Protocol by Open Whisper Systems.

The content of these conversations will be hidden in the chat list as well as in notifications to keep the information you share private.

Give it a try by selecting “New Private Conversation” from the compose menu or from the recipient’s profile. After the recipient accepts your invite, all calls and messages in that conversation will be encrypted end-to-end until you choose to end it. You can only participate in a private conversation from a single device at a time. You can switch the conversation to any of your devices, but the messages you send and receive will be tied to the device you’re using at the time.

During the preview, you will only be able to start private conversations with other Skype Insiders also running the latest version, and these interactions are limited to one-to-one conversations. Up next, we’d like to improve the UX around the invite to join a private conversation and bring the experience to the UWP client.

Private Conversations are available now to Skype Insiders using Skype version 8.13.76.8 for iOS, Android, Linux, Mac, and Windows Desktop.

To our Windows Insiders: Skype UWP Preview app adds group features

Today, we’ve updated the Skype UWP Preview app via the store on Insider versions of Windows 10. With it, Windows Insiders* can create and send group messages, as well as make group audio and video calls. In the latest experience, you can see up to four video images at once, which comes in handy when you want to witness everyone’s reaction to your latest and greatest jokes or chat about the season finale of your favorite show.

You can also chat with your group and keep the conversation going via group instant messaging.

Have favorite groups? In this release, you can also mark any person or group as a favorite. As you can see, we’ve added lots of group features to play with. In addition, we also know that autocorrect may sometimes get ahead of you, so we’ve added the ability to edit and delete messages to manage any faux pas.

What’s next? Soon, we’ll be releasing the Skype UWP Preview app to your mobile devices. You may also have noticed that we removed the Skype integration in the Messaging app on Windows 10 Mobile to streamline and simplify your experience.

The mobile release of the Skype UWP Preview app will bring you features you’ve asked for—like group calling and more—while leveraging the benefits of the Skype integration into Windows 10 you previously experienced, like a single view of your SMS and Skype conversations. This way you get the best Skype experience possible and you can take it across your Windows devices.

Keep an eye out for the mobile version of the Skype UWP Preview app. In the meantime, you can use the existing Skype for Windows Phone app available in the Windows Store.
