Windows 10: Sleep Just Shuts Down Computer

Hello. After I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, my sleep feature quit working properly. There was a point in time a couple months back it did work, but since I hardly use it I didn't notice a problem. Recently I decided I'd start using it, and that's when I noticed the problem. When I go to sleep mode, it goes to sleep, but than when I bring it out of sleep mode it just restarts. I don't get any kind of error message at all, and as far as I can tell my power settings are set right. One suggestion I found suggested to revert my driver for Intel Management Engine Interface from version 10 or 11 to 9.5. I did that, but it didn't fix it. someone in a computer help group i'm in suggested that I just reformat my hard drive and start over. I'm trying to avoid that at all costs. I see suggestions on the settings in BIOS. Which settings in particular should I look to change? If anyone has any ideas what I can do to fix this problem, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Shut Down

I went to shut down my computer and my computer will not shut down. Have tried it multiple times and just goes into sleep mode.

Sorry, just to clarify: does this fix the Shut Down issue (were computer doesn't fully shut down) as well or just fixes the issue that prevented the computer from waking from sleep mode?

 

Did you download the latest power management files for Windows 10 from Asus's website?

 

Where would I find the power management files? there aren't any listed on the drivers list for my laptop.

ok. I went there, and saw nothing for "power management files." however, they have versions of the driver for "intel power management engine interface" which I upgraded, and rolled back, upgraded again, etc. None of these attempts made my computer properly go to sleep. instead, when I wake my computer up it acts as if I just pressed the power button. I get no error messages. I tried several different suggestions and nothing seems to fix this. thanks.

 

Check your bios settings, along with Power Settings. You can also pull a report with Powercfg to tell you what is going on.

Ok, so I looked over the article you shared and rand the powercfg tool in command prompt. I ran powercfg /A and it says the following:

The following sleep states are available on this system:
standby (s3)
hibernate
hybrid sleep
fast startup

the following sleep states are not available on this system:
standby (S1)
the system firmware does not support this standby state.

standby (S2)
the system firmware does not support this standby state.

standby (S0 Low Power Idle)
the system firmware does not support this standby state.

What does this mean? thanks.

 

not too sure how the windows 10 hardware dev article is helpful. I also ran the powercfg /A command on my tablet (which I know sleeps properly) and it showed similar things my laptop showed. So what command should I be using for powercfg to find the problem? thanks.

 

The last article goes into the ACPI a little deeper. It details the S settings and such.

 

Ok, thanks. I'm not too sure why sleep mode isn't working on my computer correctly, but I did find a work-around: Hibernate does work, and still brings my computer back to where I left off at and keeps my computer in a shut-down state. So I will start using it. What I was needing was something to let my laptop consume less power when not in use, but not have to re-load everything again. I found out hibernate does this and it worked. so I'll use it. thanks.

 

Sleep states have been screwed up since XP Sp3. If you place in Hibernate, you can turn on and have the app's come back up.

In Sleep, the battery is still being consumed. Recheck Power Management settings. Some Intels chipset's did have issues with 8.1, so it would not surprise me that they are still there with 10.

 

No problem Mike. I would check for latest Bios firmware to make sure that the mfg may have updated due to this. Also double check all bios settings, to make sure that the Power Down and Sleep States are correct in there. Also check keyboard and mouse can wake. If you have a task set by Windows to wake when ran, that can mess things up, by causing the unit to wake up and run, while in a bag. That you do not want to happen and cause it to overheat.

Also double check Power Management settings. Most of the OEM Power Management utilities do not always work with Windows 10. So Windows has to load a generic mgmt tool.
