I had a second monitor plugged in at some point in time and I upgraded to Windows 10 not long after it came out.

I think I'll go with that suggestion and clean install Windows. I messed around with the registries and CLSID permissions to try to fix them, it wouldn't be such a bad idea to reset everything to default. Now should I clean install to Windows 8 or 10? I'm assuming 10 by the looks of your second post, but just making sure.

Reasons i asked how long has it been since you upgraded, if you never did a clean install before and your ASUS has a recovery partition this will be deleted on a Custom clean install, unless you use different method and keep that partition. Do you have Windows 8.1 media or recovery discs ? Activation will not be a problem since you were activated with Windows 10 just click skip when asked for the product key, if you do have any issue we can try or you can call MS it's a toll free number and automated , but it is rare you will have any issues on the same system.

I'm not sure about that. It did come with a D: drive (just C: partitioned) but it was called 'Data' and it is empty, I think. There is just 1 folder inside of it called 'msdownld.tmp' but inside of that it is empty. When I do a clean install should I add a D: drive? Should I put anything in there?

Do not worry about temp folder msdownload this can be deleted. You can keep the partitions that way, just follow the tips in # 12 here and this tutorial to show you how to keep the partitions you already have, as you will just format that C: partition and install Windows 10 on it.

You may or may not see this partition during the clean install since it is hidden i am not positive been awhile for me on this. Since you can not boot right now you need this ISO to do any kind of troubleshooting. Do not worry, you are not going to harm your Laptop and even if you decide to delete all partitions you can always add a partition afterwards.

Download the drivers pack now from ASUS before hand keep it on a flash drive. It's always good to use an external device (Hard Drive & USB Flash drive) for regular backups of important files and even think about using system image backups (Macrium Reflect).

Alright that sounds good to me. Thank you very much for all of your help, I really hope this clean install will work. I just have to find the external hard drive to back up all of the music and such and then I'll move on forward. Thank you very very much, appreciate your time and help.
