Slow shutdown with event id errors

I am still downloading windows and Microsoft updates. Boy is that slow!

Not Sherlock Holmes but old enough to have been around the block a few times!

Still has a slow shutdown. Even when I had gone to the clean boot, it was still as slow as previously. (Does tell us something?) I was ignoring shut down problem till everything is updated.

    Thanks. Will download.

After all is fully updated I will make a full image backup of everything. Then run the batch file. Appreciate your sticking with me. Will the batch file provide a readout of what it had to force close?

(Btw Ken, the latest recent update for Quicken 2016 fixed the chronic display issues it's had for years).

  3. Windows OS is the one will prompt you to close programs that are running but with this batch script they will be close automatically.

I'm starting to think this is Windows Fast Start Up or your MB Fast Boot.

On a clean install it should shutdown normally. Please disable both.

What is normally? Is my 60-70 seconds to shutdown normal? Maybe I am making a fuss about nothing.

Btw, sfc /scannow found no file integrity problems.

  6. That wouldn't bother me as I'm walking away. I guess the fact that Windows is reporting as long tells you something.

Hi Ken. I'm still alive, just was busy.

Just fyi, I downloaded the Windows 10 rescue disk you suggested and I have fresh Macrium image backups of the entire hdd. I am still getting the critical errors on shutdown so I will now look up how to disable Windows Fast Start Up and/or MB Fast Boot and get back to you. If it has to do with accessing the bios settings it make take me some time because although F2 gets me to my laptop's bios settings it does not always work.

Slow shutdown with event id errors

    OK, new information.

While researching how to disable Fastboot I discovered that W10 treats Shutdown and Restart differently. Everything I said about shutdown slowdowns was about Restart. I rarely use Shutdown alone. Sorry for the confusion.

So I decided to do a pure "Shutdown". It went very fast. 3-5 seconds. But it still generated critical errors (attached) but now they are labelled "Boot" instead of shutdown. One seems to have to do with the Avast I have running. I will need to investigate that next.

    Found this
High Disk Usage during Startup, slows down my pc Solved - Windows 10 Forums
"it's avast... one of it's settings (settings/general/smart scan) is scan for compatibility issues - meaning check to make sure programs are compatible... if it is on, you get HDD crunch on boot up as it is checking EVERYTHING running..."

But my Avast (free) does not have "scan for compatibility issues". Turned off some unimportant components of Smartscan. Will see if it makes a difference.

  11. Okay. Saw your posting re shutdown and restart. If it shutdowns correctly than you can leave fast boot and fast Startup alone. They influence starting from power on.

You could just uninstall Avast and see if things clear.

I uninstalled Avast and booted twice. Made no difference in time and Event viewer still showed the same critical error on shutdown. So I re-installed Avast.
I'm going to be away from my laptop for the next 10 days so I'm going to leave things alone. It does not seem to be a major problem right now. Thanks for the help.
