"Windows Connect Now" service is the one known to be responsible for rogue cell phones appearing in the network environment. One can disable it for that reason.

Also, if you are not using HomeGroups and are annoyed by its constant presence in the File Explorer tree, you can disable both HomeGroup services.

So far this appeared to be a safe thing to do. But it might change in the future, as it happened with such services DHCP, Windows Firewall and some others.

That's true, but keep in mind that it does not always work. Garmin Express software, for one example, does not bother to launch its Garmin device update service. If the service is changed to Manual startup, the software itself fails to launch.

One can either keep it Automatic, or remember to manually launch the service before running the front-end software.

That's what I usually do right after a clean install and I haven't experienced any problems as of yet

Not always true. In fact it is often false.

When set to manual an application CAN start the service if it is needed. But it is not safe to assume this will actually happen. In many cases an application that requires a service will simply fail if it is not running, without testing if the service is running or make any attempt to start it. And there may not even be an informative error message. The only services you can be sure are safe to set on manual are those that are are set that way by default.

  6. Here's a page that describes which Windows10 services can be set to "manual" or "disabled" on an average user's machine.
Link: Black Vipers Windows 10 Service Configurations » Black Viper | www.blackviper.com

Note: It's best to do a few at a time, restart your computer and use it for a day. Ensure that you're satisfied before tweaking a few more services.

The only fly in the ointment is that Windows-10 is undergoing so many updates, that some services are set back to automatic during the update. Never had this happen on Windows-7... probably because Win-7 was a "mature" O.S.. No major ongoing updates the past 2 years.

In that case, backup, backup, backup...... and you may want to turn synchronizing too if you have multiple windows 10 instances.

The black viper site was of great use during those long ago times when XP was king.

These days with the much better system management afforded by modern operating systems these type of tweaks are of a lot less use in real terms. By all means, if you feel a need, go through the tips on the site but don't expect to see any real improvement.

Also don't be surprised, if you disable a service, That a totally unrelated functionality ends up with issues. Independent programmers have been known to assume that a standard service is going to be running, and utilise it's procedure calls without checking, these calls will not be documented in Microsoft's dependency lists.

One other thing which is a general procedure with all tweaks to system components ...

    • Reboot the system before you perform the tweak, (many people have had issues after a tweak that were actually due to something that was there before any changes.
    • Only change one service at a time.
    • Reboot after the change.
    • Give the system a day or a week to show up any issues before you do another tweak.

  12. Ok, reset all services to default. How do you do this without a clean install?
