Windows 10: Sometimes when I try to open a picture, the photos app just comes up as a giant black box,...

I can still move the window around and close it, but the picture never displays when this happens. This is seemingly intermittent; sometimes I can open picture and view them without issue. This seems to be something that started happening recently but to my knowledge I've made no changes to my computer...

Cheap Photo box that will get the job done

WEll i took on this project for PP hes a hardware reviewer and wants to get the professional looking pics for the Pc parts

Materials:

• Big cardboard box

• a razor

• white material 3 yards

• cone lights

• stapler

• medical tape

• pvc pipe about 6 inches longer than your box

• white paint any cheap finger paint would work

the project I'm guessing will cost me $30 if it works out properly
I will post pictures and step by step as i do it

 

Open with another app 'photos'

I've just checked my own and for comparison this is what appears when selecting open with for a .jpg photo file:




If I select an image file which doesn't have associations set such as a GIMP .xcf file I see an open with... and clicking this gets to the alternative windows apps selection box:








I wonder if this gives you a clue to what your missing app should be?

 

Element not found when trying to open pics with Photos app

Thank you for being a part of Windows 10.

Do let us if this issue specific to any particular picture you trying to view and edit?

If the issue is with all the pictures, I suggest you to uninstall the app and try to reinstall from Windows Store.

Follow the below steps.

• 
  Open the Start menu, type Windows PowerShell in the search bar.
  
• 
  Right click on the Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
  
• 
  Enter the below command to uninstall the Photo app.
  
  get-appxpackage *Microsoft.Windows.Photos* | remove-appxpackage
  

After performing the above steps, install the Photo app from the Windows store.
