Windows 10: Sound Not Working After Update From 2004 t0 20H2

Computer: Dell Inspiron 15 - 5558
Audio: Realtek ALC with Waves MaxxAudio't

After an unwanted update to Windows 20H2, my sound no longer worked. I went back to 2004, but my sound still doesn't work.

Device manager only lists Other Devices = "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus". When I try updating this device using 'Search Automatically For Drivers' I get an error "Windows found driver but had error when trying to install Realtek Audio.

I tried installing driver downloaded from Dell. This resulted in an error "Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure Error Code 0x000005B3". An excerpt from the Driver Log:

Run RtlUpd64.exe : C:\Program Files (x86)\Realtek\Audio\Drivers\RtlUpd64.exe --- > -u -s -fi -nrg2709 (TRUE)
-->Realtek HD Audio - SetupAPI result LAAW_PARAMETERS.nLaunchResult = -1

InstallShield was aborted


I have tried 3 different driver versions without any luck.
I have turned off Antivirus and run sfc /scannow!

Seeking Advice Skipping 2004, Jumping to 20H2

Hello jdUnionngarden,
Before you update, I would suggest making a full backup Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect.

With a full backup image you can restore your PC back to working within 30 minutes *Smile

I would then suggest using the ISO method to update to 2004 and make another backup if it works well for you before updating to 20H2. 20H2 breaks things for some PCs which work fine with 2004 from what I've read and experienced.

 

1909 was just automatically updated to 2004, instead of 20H2

Feature update to 2004 slipped by me even though the (optional) update to 20H2 was already listed in settings/windows update. Why didn't WU simply download the 20H2 fixes with 2004? I can't believe my system has suddenly been classified as incompatible, not if 2004 is good to install. Will the enablement package be offered next tuesday? I have checked for updates manually and it doesn't find it.

This is likely because you are using Windows 10 Pro for workstations. As you have the 2004 release, I suggest using the enablement package to download 20H2 which is smaller in size - see method 4 here:
