  1. Spinning Dots at Boot Up

tried a clean install. got into windows. It activated. Then it started downloading updates. I did not install any dell drivers yet so I figured I would just let it continue and would do drivers after. Then when installed, got a blue screw and some power state failure error and then boot and now the spinning dots again!

Go ahead and post this in the BSOD thread, perhaps @axe0, @essenbe or @Boozad can help. First follow the instructions before posting. It might be a hardware problem, that's not my world, but I'm very sure one of those 3 will be glad to help.

  3. thanks. I think I will try a clean install first but pull the network cable so updates do not go automatically. Then manually install the dell drivers, then run update. I do not have the exact error code so cannot post that yet.

Still not sure why this happens. I have dell pro support and they believe it is not hardware since the hardware passed the diagnostics.

Ok Mike. One more thing then, to keep Windows Update from downloading and installing drivers in the future, here is a copy & paste from another thread I'm on:

  5. out of curiosity, I just tried restoring an acronis image of just the OS partition to the drive that I did a clean install on. Same thing is happening with the spinning dots. I assume the boot information is on the os partion?

    thanks

Nope, UEFI where the ESP is.

  7. So if I kept the UEFI partition from the clean install and just imaged the os, should I have gotten different results?

I have absolutely no idea, sorry. I always make full images, no just partitions, no incremental and no differential, they all have a chance of corrupting.

  9. That is what I do with acronis. Full images. For some reason, they are just not working.

Like I said before, it could be a hardware issue too, if every thing worked well before and suddenly this. That's why I recommended you try the BSOD forum. Before that, open your PC check that the connections sit well, specially the RAM and disk.

  11. thanks, I did not pull and reset any parts, but I did run a dell diag again and all passed. I also tried the hold hard drive i have 8.1 on and it boot fine. I am not going to try and restore the last image I made with 8.1 before going to 10 (made on 8/3/15).

  12. one note, my son stated he did a reboot when a game Ark Survival was updating and he went to do a restart. That is when the first spinning dots issue happened. Then he force powered it off. Not sure if that cuased it, but still the restores should work. But those could be two unrelated issues where the acronis restore just does not work with 10.

Tried doing a chkdsk /f on that partition?

  14. i did not try chkdsk. I cannot get into windows. I just did a restore of the last image I made with win 8.1 and that worked and system seems fine. Must be something with win 10 and acronis. Maybe my original spinning dots issues is separate from teh spinning dots after the acronis restore. I do not know. Grasping at air here for a solution.

I think I will try one more restore of the win 10 image and then use the recovery usb drive to do a repair. I do not remember now if I tried that!?!?
