Discus and support SppExtComObj.Exe in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; Please be sure to download the most recent ISO from Microsoft for the in-place repair. Is it ok to do the repair with the media creation tool option? bTW the block is still there, I must have missed it as it only comes up for a second or two. Actual tells me that I have to d/l the iso which I am doing right now

Yes, if I remember correctly, the MCR will download W10, and you will have an option to save the ISO to a flash drive/DVD (can't remember exactly); I think it's "save to upgrade another computer" or something similar.

If you do the ISO, then save it to your computer, right-click, select Mount, and then run setup.exe right from within your current operating system.

EDIT: Please be sure to disconnect all other drives.

  3. OK I D/L windows 10, "Win10_1607_English_x64.iso" but I don't get Mount. If I double click the file, it opens WinZip, there is a setup file there. I'm lost and don't want to get this wrong after all this hard work. Am I supposed to be burning the file to a disk?

You don't double-click, you right-click and select Mount. Mounting ISOs is a feature built in to W10, and is available through the right-click function. When mounted, the ISO will be given a drive letter, and you can open it in File Explorer.

Just thinking....if you have WinZip installed, it may have taken over, and you won't find that Mount option. Maybe uninstall WinZip for now.

  6. Nope, when I right clicked I don't get any option to mount. Just the normal list of open with etc. Hmm, maybe I have some file settings wrong with what opens what? Its the samed list that I get up if I right click any other file starting with Open with ..... and ending in properties. GOT IT, I had to change the default opening program

In my system, I have WinX DVD program, which takes over mounting/creating virtual drives for ISO archives. So, my Mount selection is highlighted "Mount Image to Driver with WinX". I also have Power Archiver on here, which is similar to 7-Zip and Win Zip. In this case, I can select "Extract to" and tell Power Archiver to extract all files to my Desktop. Then, on my desktop will be the setup.exe file, which is the one you want to double-click to start the in-place repair.

So, don't uninstall WinZip - my mistake; you must have another CD/DVD software on your system which has taken over that function (CyberLink comes to mind as one of them, Roxio is another).

Select keep personal files and apps - that will keep all your programs as well as your data.

Fingers crossed! It's late here and I'm signing off. This repair should take just about as long as an upgrade, so don't be surprised. Good luck! *Smile

  12. OK it worked like a dream and no more blocking at the beginning!
THANKYOU so much for your help, it has been great.
Just a last couple of questions.:
    - I'm going to do an image of the OS drive just in case before I do anything else.
    - Do I keep Defender or ditch it.
    - What's with this Cortina thing, I got rid of it last time.
    - Backup up strategy is now OK but what do you recommend re continues virus scans etc.
    Cheers
    Paul

Well I haven't installed anything and the blocked website came up again on MBAM! Devistated! I think the best route now is to do a clean install

  14. Ok, I bit the bullet and have started a clean install. Given that I have been infected with a cryptolocker it's probably the best thing to do. I have learnt a lot though in this whole process so thanks for your help!

Oh my goodness! It worked, and the blocking issue is still there....so, yes clean install it is.

One question: When you started the clean install, did you do a "custom" install, and delete all partitions and install to a completely unallocated drive? Because of the infection issue, that would be highly recommended.

Yes, it's a good idea to image the clean install as soon as it's completed. Then, after you've got your programs loaded, image again. Keep those two images safe someplace offline for future need. Then, setup Macrium to image on a schedule.

Backup best practises are 3-2-1: Three rotating backups, two on-site, one off-site. One set offline at all times.

I'll make some personal recommendations here - others may have different ideas, and you need to do what's best for you:

Active AV: ESET NOD (paid) or Avast! Free (custom install, only the 3 shields and software updater, nothing else)
MBAM (Paid, especially since they will be rolling in their anti-ransomware module when it's out of BETA)
    Malwarebytes AntiExploit (free)
    CryptoPrevent (free - update yourself)
    SuperAntiSpyware (free - run yourself)
    Ccleaner (Free - run yourself)
Macrium Reflect (free - for your images)

Since you can "Mount" a Macrium image, and pull any files out of it, in their natural state, you can use this exclusively for your OS + data backups. Be sure to include "verification" in your instruction set. Macrium Images will be compressed, and will take up less space than just copying your data.
Defender will be disabled when you install your 3rd-party AV.
Please don't do anything to Cortana - she is becoming more and more entrenched in the OS, and messing with her can eventually bork your system.
