    SSD might be missing from BBS menu- found failure with win10 1903 and no issue with 1803

    Hi All,

    I've encountered an issue recently on some x86 PCs with 19H1(aka 1903).

    I've two SSDs (A & B) and both have win10 home 19H1 installed.
    Failure detail description:

    1) Boot to SSD_A and shutdown from OS normally

    2) Power off the system

    3) Remove SSD_A and install SSD_B

    4) Power on and boot to SSD_B then shutdown from OS normally

    5) Press power button and power on again, system stop with "No bootable Device Detected!"

    6) Entering BIOS setup utility and check the SSD is detected correctly but not listed as bootable device from BBS

    7) Boot to Shell and found the boot variable "Boot0000" of SSD is "0x08" instead of "0x01"

    From UEFI Specification,

    #define LOAD_OPTION_ACTIVE 0x00000001

    #define LOAD_OPTION_HIDDEN 0x00000008

    More test:

    1) No failure with Win10 1803 version.

    2) No failure if do not boot to OS. That is to say, entering into BIOS setup utility each time and check the BBS menu instead of booting to SSD.

    From the those tests, Win10 1903 is supposed to be the owner to change the boot variable of SSD's partition from active to hidden.

    But why? Please help advise, thanks!

    Celia

    :)

    Win10: windows update stuck at never ending loop ?

    When in win10:
    • Update&security -> Windows update -> Finding update... .... .... ....
    Planning to download the latest Win10.ISO (vers.1803) and manually update:
    - Then wait that my ordered new SSD arrives and clone the old HDD to it.

    Win 10 1809 to 1903 Failure And Odd Issue Found

    No listing under MSConfig Boot tab / not sure what to do

    Similar there.
    You are missing an EFI partition too. Here's mine (1903) - note the 99Mb EFI partition:

    - noting the Recovery partition is NTFS - not sure where the idea in that thread about FAT32 comes from.

    Here are all the partitions - Disk Management omits the 16Mb one:

    In the thread I quoted- not the most straightforward- it seems one basic step taken was to
    a. Image 'C: '
    b. Clean install Windows
    c. Replace the new Windows partition by restoring it from the image created
    d. (Note when rebooting, this may sort itself out via automated repair, or need Startup repair to be run)

    If you search for
    msconfig boot empty
    or
    msconfig boot empty "Windows 10"
    you will find numerous references which may help.
