  1. SSD wiped itself

Hoping I put this in the correct topic.
I have a Asus X450JF running win 10 pro, with a Crucial BX200 SSD. Last night I went to try and get on it, and it booted straight to the bios, after t/s found it still recognized the SSD however it has been wiped, like if I have another pc look at it, it has all unallocated space like it's brand new. I do have my laptop set to turn on a few programs at midnight then shutdown at 5am (due to satellite connection and unlimited data at those times). Have never had an issue. My first thoughts lead to a virus, not sure if it was a hardware malfunction or not.

Any ideas? I am lucky some files are backed up, but now need to hunt drivers again.

    :)

  2. Bad Hardware - Blue spinning circle (Solved)

Performed a clean install using Windows ISO file

    - Selected Windows Home version

Everything is up and running now!

srttrail.txt error has gone from the SSD

Ran a SSD / HDD check for all 3 drives and no errors were found using seagate seatools.

Although I decided to wipe my SSD no information has been corrupted on either hard drive.

Still dont know why my computer decided to lock itself up, windows 1709 has finally been able to install.

My guess is some driver was preventing this and caused a critical failure.

  3. Re-install Win10

Understand that but I have a lot of junk on that SSD land want to get rid of all of it and start over. If I wipe the SSD then I am not restoring win10, I am starting all over again.

If I wipe that drive - therefore having nothing on the computer at that point - can I use the media restore tool on the USB to boot from and then re-download win10? Will win10 recognize that I had win 8.1 on the computer after I wipe the SSD and therefore
allow me to download a fresh win10?

So, the drive is working now? I assume so if you are looking for drivers - that means you reinstalled Windows or an image?

I would certainly run some hard drive diagnostics on it (several) before I trusted it again.

That can happen if the Partition Table on the drive gets corrupted or damaged. And that only needs a few "sectors" to go bad to do so. If that were the case then all of your data is still on the drive, just inaccessible without rebuilding the Partition table. There are programs that can do that.
But if you have already started loading stuff, then that horse is out of the barn.

  5. No, not running that was the plan to reinstall windows. Now after I put it in an enclosure on another laptop, I can see all my stuff is still there now, just it will not boot. It now says boot manager is missing, my thought is maybe it was updating and that got interrupted..

What program could I use? I have the free mini tool, that has come in handy, actually how I found my drive is still intact.

    Partition Wizard?
I believe that will do it, depending on the version. That is, rebuild the Master Boot Record (MBR), or if the disk was initialized GPT then you need to rebuild the GPT.
Other programs are Easeus Partition Master, and Acronis Disk Director, and others.

However, it sounds like you have a different problem, given the Boot Manager error message.
Please read these articles to get an idea of how to approach that problem:
What is Windows Boot Manager? (BOOTMGR Definition)

    And
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2622803/windows-error-message-bootmgr-is-missing-press-ctrl-alt-del-to-restart

You might want to see if the GPT partitioning is intact on the disk.
It should have a 100MB+/- SYSTEM partition, and a 200MB+/- MSR Partition (Microsoft Reserved Partition), both before the C: Windows partition.
The MSR is where your boot is managed from.

  7. Well tried rebuilding the MBR. Did not work, so need to figure out how to get the bootmgr back

Did you try some of the methods in the second link above?

Do you see the MSR partition when you view the drive in Partition Wizard?

daktoahorse24, was windows 10 installed on to your SSD, or
was the SDD cloned off your HD ?

I experienced similar problem from cloning, but not when W10 installed.
(I found Refresh & Keep my files cured)

  10. @TV2 I only see 1 link, that is to what the bootmgr is, not sure what the MSR partition is, I'll look it up and see if I can see it.
I get an error when using my DVD, seems common, the CD drive can't communicate or something, so I got a USB made last night will try a repair today.
@me75006 yes I cloned it from the original HDD Did this about 10 months ago I think. Hoping to avoid a fresh install, but if it comes to that at least I can save my files.

I did need to restore an image backup of the ssd to have it boot. Then I did the 'Refresh & Keep my files'.

User Programs and some drivers will need to be re-installed/updated.
If you can get W10 to boot, there are ways to get your current collection of drivers save (to re-use later).

Ah. There are 2 links. I'll separate them now to avoid that confusion.
