Windows 10: Start Button Not Working, Now Screen is Black

Hello,


After a Microsoft update to my Windows 10 system I noticed my, "Start" button does not do a thing. I click it and nothing happens. I tried rebooting and now I get a black screen after signing on so I cannot even get to my home page anymore. Not the blue screen of death, but a pitch black screen. If I hit ctrl-alt-delete the Task Manager does in fact come up, much to my surprise, but that doesn't solve my problem. I still cannot get to my home page, and therefore cannot access any files or use the PC in any meaningful way. Is there any way to correct this issue short of doing a complete re-install? The PC is 5 years old and I have no idea where the OS disk is, so I'll be out money to buy a new OS, plus having to buy MS Office Suite again. Not real happy with MS right now as their update appears to have been the equivalent of putting a virus on my PC.

Black screen after 'Starting Windows' sequence

Sounds like the old... windows black screen of death.

Google search and you will find a lot of the "Windows Black Screen of Death with cursor" fixes.

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.

Start Button displaying but not working


The start button was working until there was a forced reboot (power failure). Then left click (normal click) over the start button does absolutely nothing. Right click brings up a menu but "programs" and also "settings" are missing and not included on this list. Search or Task View buttons do not work either with "normal" click. Does anyone have any suggestion or fixes?
