What is the Long Term Servicing Branch?

“Windows 10 uses a new approach to providing updates to users. Traditionally Microsoft would release a version of Windows and then provide updates such as security and bug fixes, but not add any major, new functionality. Every few years Microsoft would release a new version of Windows that contains updates and new features but this meant customers would always have to wait years for new functionality. With Windows 10, Microsoft is giving users greater choice in how they receive new features with the introduction of a long-term servicing branch (LTSB) and a current branch (CB) version.

The LTSB is similar to how versions are delivered today with a new one delivered every couple of years and in between each new version Microsoft will provide security updates, bug fixes and so on. Alternatively, customers can choose to use the CB method which provides security updates, bug fixes, and new features every few months.

When each LTSB is released it will converge with the currently existing CB, allowing customers to transition from CB to LTSB, in the event they decide they no longer want to receive updates so frequently. Customers using LTSB will be able to upgrade between LTSB builds and likely one additional time prior LTSB (current Windows 8.1 would count as a LTSB).”

To sum this up in a short way:
The Long Term Servicing Branch versions of Windows 10 act like older versions of Windows in that you will still receive security patches and bug fixes through Windows Update but you will not receive enhancements and new feature upgrades.

Just activating will be a major challenge

Your very welcome and it's very ideal for my personal use regarding VPN assistance and trouble shooting via Web or in closed networks

Not so regarding making or primary admin operation ( all depends what your want to use this powerful os for and your right it's not for your boot up and surf type of users)

Plus LTSB is much more locked down by default through out the network section

I had the problem of desktop not working etc. fixed it 5 times by going into safe mode and out again, The last time I did it it was ok then wanted to load lots of updates. An hour later it said Windows must restart. It did so and seemed ok.I shut down for the rest of the day but when statring up again..nothing, black screen, no responce, nothing exept the little blue light is on. Lucyly I have a spare computer with 7 on otherwise I couldt be on here but anyone know how to get it started? I cant click on anything as screen is blank so catch 22 really. Fed up with Windows 10 !

  12. Hello again JDS,

You are my hero, I went to the weblink you suggested and reinstalled all app by pasting Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"} in to Powershell and now seach and the Start Menu are working.

Thanks ever do much for you and Acura's advise and help, hopefully if anyone else has this problem this thread will be useful.

I wonder if all the errors that SFC found had something to do with the problem in the first place, hopefully now all errors are fixed my PC will settle down until the big rebuild next year.

EDIT-- spoke too soon, now my built in apps won't open, they show as a blank square and if I hoover over them I get a long description, apps that do not work are Store, photo's, calculator, alarms, skype, messaging. MS solitaire etc - Any clues on this?

    Thanks again

    Tony
