How did you manage to turn off Cortana in settings? I can't get to settings as far as I can tell.

Mystere, all I did was take ownership of my 5 hard drives, remove the old rogue SID from their permissions which was tied to previous windows install, and then share them on my home network. I did not even touch the c drive, as it got formatted during windows load so no need.

Ok, so you didn't take ownership of C:\? If you didn't touch the permissions of the OS drive, then what applications did you install?

  3. Only Apps I installed are as follows:

    Office 2016 preview
    Waterfox
    Free Commander
    Pdf Xchange Viewer
    ITunes
Kodi - Previously known as XBMC
    Picasa
    UltraVNC

    That's it.

  5. I am starting to wonder if this is not hardware or driver related. The start menu in 10 has always been a bit sluggish for me. takes a second or 2 to launch when clicked. Have to carefully drag and drop tiles if I want them to move around properly. I am using an older Athlon X4 635 Processor running at 2.8ghz, with 8gb of RAM, and for Graphics I have an Nvidia GTX 460. I am using just stock drivers that got loaded along with windows, and windows update.

Before I thought maybe the problem was that I initially loaded 10041, and then upgraded via windows update to 10074. This time I just loaded straight 10074 from ISO. I disabled Cortana by right clicking on task bar, going to search, and setting that to disabled. This unfortunately did not help. Still, I am fairly sure Cortana is the problem, as every time I click the start button, an error like this winds up in Windows Event viewer:
The server CortanaUI.AppXxyde1azfm5q2smw80a61pahvbmv0x90z.mca did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

Have you tried to create a new user account to see if it has the same problem?

  7. Yes I did that. One of the first things I tried. Did not help unfortunately. This time around I can use the volume rocker.

  8. Start Menu not working after latest forced reboot.

Win-button + i opens the Settings here. Then I searched for Cortana, opened the speech settings and turned off "Get to know me", then turned Location off, didn't check if both were actually needed.

  9. I was sort of hoping that would work, but unfortunately turning off get to know me did not help either. Still no start menu.

  10. I sugest installing again using a fresh ISO - then leave the system alone for a while (no mucjing about on the drives)P

Install one application at a time and see if that works.
    then the next application

    all the while testing Start.

Don't worry about fine tuning ... the previews change often and you will most likely have to 'tune' it again.

The objective is to get a working system - stable is a relative term since this is development code being tested, not a commercially available product.

I know it's a pain, but if you take things a step at a time and don't change much, the experience will be better. Taking it slow means you know when something breaks and you know what broke it.

I'm not suggesting that you don't try to break Win10, I'm suggesting that you get it running first *Wink

  11. That's a good suggestion. I'll give it a go this evening.

Update: Reloaded Windows. Start menu is working. Running through windows updates now.

Update again: Knock on wood, I have installed most of the apps I commonly use and I still have a start menu. I have not installed Rocketdock or iTunes, and given that I know longer have an iPhone, I am thinking I probably no longer need ITunes on my machine. Rocketdock will be missed, but I'd rather not risk it. For now, all is still working.
