  1. Start Menu showing Critical Error after installing KB4517389 update

KB4524147 originally caused a critical error when using Start Menu AND it prevented my printer from printing. The latter was because of some mess up with the print spooler. I uninstalled KB4524147 and BOTH problems disappeared.

This morning, I updated with KB4517389. The printer seems to work, BUT I receive a critical error when using the Start Menu.

    I suppose I need to uninstall KB4517389?

  2. Critical Error with Start Menu

    Hi,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

    • What is the exact error message are you getting?

I would suggest you to refer to the suggestions provided by Ravinath P on October 5, 2015 and check if it helps.

“Critical Error – Start menu and Cortana aren’t working. We’ll try to fix it the next time you sign in.”

Observations on "Start menu Critical Error" and Update KB3105210

This would be the second time I've across this error.

The first time we met, I followed the steps outlined by the PaulSey... post from this similar issue.

Critical Error – Start menu and Cortana aren’t working. We’ll try to fix it the next time you sign in.

With no 3rd party anti-virus software installed, this method DID NOT RESOLVE it.

What resolved it? As it happens, the first instance of this error occurred
    AFTER
I restarted my PC to complete the automated updates from the OS manufacturer. To be exact,
Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB3105210).

Booting back into my account, I navigate to Programs & Features. View installed updates. Sort my updates by "Installed On" and was not disappointed to find the aforementioned "Cumulative" Update KB3105210 to have the most recent install date.

Uninstalled the delightful update, restarted my computer.

Start Menu, Action Center, & Cortana now responsive as advertised by the Manufacturer.

As I said, this was the second time I've come across this error.

In order for me to update "Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 1.209.1862.0, I was resigned to update/restart my system with the incomplete KB3105210. I've had it (the malformed KB3105210) installed for no longer than an hour as the same "Critical
Error: Your Start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in" dysfunction returns. I restored my Start Menu access by way of the steps mentioned, ONLY this time, I see several
Failed to Install (todays date) 11/06 listed in my Update history. At each failed listing, its tooltip information does not populate any discernible information.

I'd like to see either the Start Menu Error addressed or a means to introduce an update that will castrate whatever issue is related to KB3105210.

Question: How do you inspect the quality of updates before releasing them to your tractable market?

Side Question: How do you solve a problem like Maria? BY Maria, I mean KB3105210 and its relation to the Critical Start Menu error.

Edit: (Nov 20, 2015) As of the Windows10 November Update - I work free of the
Security Update for Microsoft Windows KB3105210 and the vicious Critical Error: Start Menu, Cortana, & Action Menu issues connected to it.

Of the resolution methods suggested by
Harshavardhan below, I've only exercised the first Method 1. Yet it seemed to be a temporary solution. I never got to complete Method 2.

To all future readers, may your troubleshooting be easier and brilliant in its results.
