    Right.

And when I did this the past three days I got incomprehensible error messages like "multiple default gateways ... will not function properly ..." even though the default gateway entered is correct, and when the dialog is closed, Windows Troubleshooter brings up a dialog, says it is looking for a solution and of course finds none.

That is interesting. What has Windows update got to do with this.

Could I suggest that you manual invoke the Windows trouble shooter and lets see if we can't get that cleared. Really not sure of relationship but something is hooked.

Windows key + S, search bar appears, type troubleshooting into search bar, troubleshooting appears at top. Click it, window opens, lower right side "Fix problems with Windows Update", click. Window opens, click on “advance”, click on Run as administrator, click “Next”. Should run clean. If not run again.

It says "Try troubleshooting as administrator". I said OK.

It whirrs awhile, then offers to undo and redo the last windows update. Grrr. Give me a few minutes to once again curse Bill Gates and all his works ... OK, I'm back. I've taken up Windows Troubleshooter offers I don't know maybe a hundred times over the last 32 years---doing my bit, among millions of others, to beta-test Windows 1, 2, 3, 95, 98, Pro, XP, 7, now 10. Not one Troubleshooter shot any trouble. Not a one. Often the Troubleshooter eats quite a lot of my time. That's the Windows equation: spend customer time to maintain M$oft product profit margin. (I know, M$oft ain't the only US corp that does this.) Indeed it's theoretically possible that this will be the Troubleshooter that breaks the losing streak. I'll bet you a truckload of Microsoft bug reports it's not, but black swans ie long tail probabilities are never provably zero, and I need a solution, so I must give it a try. I mean, I should've stopped before 32 years went by, and we don't yet have all the Linux functionality in place to let us jettison Windows for good. So I'll give it a try when I've updated the machine's backups and the machine isn't needed for a while. Thank you for your efforts so far.

Interesting, ipconfig reports the default gateway is 192.168.1.1. That's the value I give Ethernet | Properties | internet Protocol version 4 Proparties. What do you suggest?

That should be the right gateway. Maybe it is time to start over, on the network. By this I mean run the Windows Network Reset.

Did running the the update trouble shooter show errors and that it fixed them?

I hear you on testing the suppliers goods. I have an iPhone. They release ios X, two weeks later X.1, then X.2 followed by X.2.1.

Instead of adding feature after feature lets get the existing stuff working. That ain't going to happen, we need sales, not productive users.

Have not had time to run it yet.

The open source model evidently works better for OS software.

I've had some strange networking problems resolved by disabling IPV6. Still can't explain why.
