Windows 10: Steps Recorder (psr.exe) on Windows 10 doesnt save file on system reboot

I need to record all user actions on a test machine between 2 reboots (it was test scenario).

I wrote a small C# app to capture shutdown event and stop the recording. But it recorder gets killed before C# app receives signal.


My goal is to save the recording file between reboots. if the app already have that feature in commanline arguments that will help a lot.


is there any solution for this?

Steps Recorder there... but not there


I seemed to have been saved by a link to this fix:
Please use regedit to rename hklm\software\policies\microsoft\windows\AppCompat - changeAppCompat to AppCompat_HOLD . Then try launching PSR again.
Tried it and now Steps Recorder seems to be working as it should.
But to follow up on your suggestion, I'm going to try to find and repair the corrupt files that my sfc scan found... after setting a restore point!

You could use the Problem steps recorder [PSR] because it will allow you to save both screenshots & your own comments at each step so you'd be getting the best of both worlds fairly easily.

Problem Steps Recorder - Not Opening - Windows 10

I just upgraded to Windows 10 (PRO, 64bit) from Windows 7. Problem Steps Recorder (PSR) will not open. I have located it in Apps and its .exe location. When executed it does not open.

I found one proposed solution online that showed a registry change of the key directory:

hkey_local_machine\software\policies\microsoft\windows\AppCompat to

hkey_local_machine\software\policies\microsoft\windows\AppCompat_HOLD

When I made this change, PSR started working properly. However, after a reboot, the original AppCompat directory was reinstalled in the registry (the new "AppCompat_HOLD" was still there). PSR no longer would work. Is there another solution?
