Stop the "Burn a Disc" dialog from popping up on Blank Disc insertion

    Great explanation, smartcooky. *Smile

I'm wondering if it loaded a different driver by uninstalling/reinstalling. Did you notice any version number or manufacturer difference upon reinstall?

Unchecking those boxes do not break anything. Uncheck them and also do not let burning software to automatically start, will solve your problems.

  3. Ok so I tested your theory.

When "Use Autoplay for all media and devices" is checked....

    1. Inserting USB drives automatically opens them to show me the contents
    2. Inserting a music CD opens VLC Media Player to play the disc
    3. Inserting a data CD or Data DVD automatically opens to show me the contents
    4. Inserting a movie DVD opens VLC Media Player and plays the movie

I have it set up this way in Autoplay because I want all these things to happen.

When I uncheck the "Use Autoplay for all media and devices" box, all of these things stop happening, i.e. your solution of unchecking the box breaks the functionality I want.

No, I wrote that down (just in case something went wrong)

The DVD is an LG M-Disk - in device manager its listed as

    HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24NSD1
    driver file cdrom.sys ver 10.0.15063.0

This information remained the same after reinstallation.

Ok thanks. We might conclude that the driver was corrupt and not recognizing/adhering to any settings. My thoughts anyway.

The biggest issue when you insert a disc. Is that if there is another outbreak of Wanna Cry and someone decides to embed it in a media file, it can end up with the Trojan taking off before you could stop it. Always use precaution also with USB drives, since if they come from someone else or you use them on a public computer, you need to sandbox them to keep anything that may be on the drive if you have it not set to be scanned by A/V software. I would just make it so that you have to mount the media and USB, instead of letting the OS. The last part is that it can also end up locking your computer up while working on something or cause it to crash if the program locks up and crashes. Always side on precaution, since you never know what an update could cause with Windows 10, since we keep finding it quirks out.

  7. OK, well if you are sounding a general warning about Autoplay then fair enough.

However, I am well hardened against attack. The only "foreign" disks that I insert in my PC are commercial movie DVDs and I am reasonably confident that I won't get "wannacry" from any of those.
