Storage Spaces Pool - How to find enumerated drive number?

    Hi All,

When creating a Storage Spaces Pool, the member drives are no longer listed in Disk Management.

My system has been hanging every so often and when I checked the Windows logs, I see a lot of critical error messages about Harddisk/DR10 having a bad block. Since Disk Management no longer lists the individual pool drives, how do I find out which DR10 is one of the pool member drives?

I've tried mini partition tool to see if it can see the drives, it doesn't. It can only see what Disk Management sees and that's only non-storage spaces pooled drives.

    Many thanks!
    Chuck

  2. Windows 10 storage spaces

I set up a storage space with two drives, mutually mirrored, then recently added another pair. The storage spaces manager shows the extra capacity but the pool still appears at the original size. How do I set up the new drives as additional mirrored space,
or must it form a new pool to avoid deleting the currently stored data?

I suppose I could back up all the data then set the pool up from scratch as a four-drive mirrored pool, but how?

    driver pool

I'll start by sorting out the terminology.

Driver/Drivers are a software that is used by other software to give instructions to hardware.

You can pool Hard Drives (HDD) or other forms of 'drive' (SSD) - AKA- Storage Pool, or RAID Array.

No simple explanation, so I'll link some tutorials. Each may cover a point that the others don't, or use a

    slightly different approach.

    - There are also some software, such as Stablebit, that manage storage pools, but I've never had a need for any myself.

    Thank you for the help.

After reading up on my situation, because of Microsoft's ReFS, information on how to resolve my problem is practically non-existent.

I was able to locate the bad drive simply by clearing the Windows system logs, disconnecting all drives in the pool, reconnect one drive at a time, reboot the computer and watch for any bad block error entries in the Windows system logs to appear. Rinse and repeat until all of the pooled drives were reconnected.

The good news is that I did find the drive. The bad news is now trying to remove it from the pool. I'll leave that for another day's post.

Personally, Microsoft has a lot of more work ahead to make Storage Spaces a much more friendly tool.

Agreed- management and error handling looks fraught with problems.
