Strange behavior & black screen of death during November 2019 update?

    Hello everyone,

I had a strange issue yesterday during the Nov. 2019.

I don't let windows update check automatically for updates since they're often very buggy; but check the updates manually about once a month and let the Nov. 2019 get download and installed (I though it was the Oct 2019 one and should've check the message board to make sure I wasn't installing the Nov. one to be honest).

I did all the usual : download, install, restarted my device to complete the install; and while the install was running I left my computer alone and plugged in, sitting on my coffee table, while I was doing something else in the kitchen. I can see my laptop from my kitchen and notice an abrupt showdown at about 33% of the install process. I had no power outrage, my laptop was plugged in and the battery charged at 100%. My computer didn't overheated either, as it was sitting on its cooling tablet that was plugged in and running.

I though "urgh, not again" since I already had a similar bug before and this led to a bootloop, blackscreen of death, and I eventually had to wipe windows out and perform a clean install (well actually I completely got rid of windows and switched to linux for a while with a dual boot in case I needed windows)

My decide didn't restart by itself either (I selected the "restart and update" option from the menu).

So I finished what I was doing, came back to my PC 5 minutes after the shutdown, and booted it. I ended up seeing a black screen, couldn't even reach the windows log-in. I left my computer on the black screen for a solid hour, since my hard-drive LED was blinking, I though maybe it was still performing the install in the background or something. Never came out of the black screen state. Using my phone, I searched online and found out that windows issued this bug, did all the steps (ctrl+alt+del didn't bring the task manager; win+shift+crtl+B didn't refresh my graphics).

Thankfully I was able to get into the "safe mode" boot by starting ans shuting down my machine 3 times; and had a system image that was made 2 days prior so I was able to restore my computer without loosing datas, and definitely won't install this update; but... I'd like to know what the heck happened here?

There was no reason for my laptop to shut down so abruptly in the middle of an update and I'm pretty sure that's what messed it up; so I'd like to understand the problem in order to avoid it later?

    :)

  2. Windows 7 black screen of death

I read a report a little while ago that said the black screens were nothing to do with updates but due to a malicious program (it hit more than just windows 7 users - vista, xp and 2000 were also prone to the black startup screen of death if infected). My windows 7 install is fully up-to-date and i've never had the black startup screen.

Just run some decent anti virus and you should be safe (i suggest microsoft security essentails since it's free and pretty decent). When you've installed an anti-virus i'd suggest doing a full scen to be sure there's nothing there.

Nothing Worked the black death comes after a while.

    Then:

    • Personalisation:

Is the black screen back? November 2018

Soon after the November 2018 critical Windows 10 update, my 2+ year old Lenovo laptop started having repeated black screen issues. In the middle of me doing something, the device would shut off, give a black screen of death, and restart automatically in
about 30 seconds to the login screen. Once I logged in again, it took me back to exactly what I was doing. It was doing this like every 5-10 minutes. Sleep et al setting are set to "never".

    Anyone else have this problem?

I am not technical so please don't suggest engineering level fixes.
