  1. stuck at "working on updates" at 27%, reboots to rotating dots

HI all, this is the second of two laptops that I can't upgrade to Windows 10.

This is a Toshiba Satellite L665-S5156 running OEM installed Windows 7 Home, fully updated and activated with OEM marker present in firmware as per ShowKeyPlus. I am trying to upgrade this to Windows 10 Home using MediaCreationTool1909 from Administrator account, ethernet network hooked into working Internet connection.

Every time, it allows me a straight path to upgrade to Windows 10 Home, allowing me to keep settings, apps and personal data, progresses just fine to "Working on updates 27%", and after letting it run for about an hour with some disk activity, it reboots on its own, and ends up with the spinning dots and nothing else on the screen and no further disk activity. I let this be for up to 5 hours and no progress. I had to hold the power button 4 seconds to power cycle and it rebooted back into the same freeze. 3 times and then it did "Undoing changes made to your computer" (praise be) and I got back my fully working Windows 7 Home computer (with a "Setup is preparing your computer for first use".. ???) after another huge wait.

Once it reboots and I log back into the Administrator account I get a big window saying "We couldn't install Windows 10, We set your PC back to the way it was right before you started installing Windows 10" and the error: "0xC1900101 - 0x30017 The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation". Going to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...llation-errors doesn't show this particular error.

I uninstalled as many 3rd party drivers as I could but there are still Atheros, touchpad and Intel drivers which I can't believe would cause this problem; in any case, uninstalling these would make my system unusable. I am in as clean a boot as possible. I have tried this with and without Avast anti-virus installed and as little starting up or running as possible. No joy.

The setuperr.log is huge (181K !!) with multiple errors. I can post the entire file here, but didn't want to and spam the forum. SetupDiag is no help: it shows only the same 0xC1900101-0x30017 error which appears to be a Rollback error? I can't find documentation for this error anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated; I am totally stuck here.

    Thanks in advance.

    :)

  3. Login from lock screen stuck on circular rotating dots

    The following happens intermittently:

    • I'm working and use the Windows+L key combination to lock my screen to leave for a period (can be short or long).
    • I return and use Ctrl+Alt+Del to log back in.
    • I get a blue screen with a small circle of spinning dots, which goes on indefinitely.
    • I have to hard boot my laptop by holding down the power button for about 10 seconds.
This started happening only after I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Anniversary Edition. This appears to be a common problem with Windows 10:

I've tried most of the suggestions from these an other sources, but nothing has solved this issue -- which is very disruptive to productivity and seems to be specific to Windows 10. Please reply with only real solutions.

Rotating dots on blue background instead of default lock screen

A week ago I switched on my PC (Windows 10 Pro 64 bit with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card) which had previously been working and on which I had made no changes. It went through the normal boot. There are 5 users and normally it gets to the default lock screen (beach from cave) which I hit enter to display the user list. But this time instead of the lock screen it displayed a blue screen with rotating dots. The dots sometimes made complete circles and sometimes started to make a circle get part way round then jump to the beginning. Mouse+keyboard was not responding. I could access the shared content from another PC. I had previously setup the PC to accept Remote Desktop connection. When I attempted Remote Desktop from my Windows phone my taskbar would load on my phone but the desktop would not and nothing responded. When I tried to access from my laptop it would not respond at all. I logged into safe mode and switched to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. This booted but took longer to get to the user list and didn't display the lock screen. Also the user list screen flickered blank and back on. I logged into a user. WIN+L triggered the user's lock screen, but never the default one. Edge displays a blank window but Chrome works correctly. I changed the default lock screen and tried with the ATI driver - same rotating dots. I have a spare nVidia card so I went back to safe mode, changed back to MS Basic Adapter, rebooted into normal mode, uninstalled the ATI software, shutdown, replaced the ATI card with a nVidia card, rebooted - but the same problem of rotating dots on blue background. I ran sfc /scannow which reported some corrupt files which it said it fixed but that didn't cure the problem. I ran chkdsk which found some problems which it fixed. I tried system restore but Windows 10 has never made a restore point! I never got round to making a repair disc. If I load with MS Basic Adapter then let Windows install the correct driver for ATI or nVidia card, the monitor changes to full resolution desktop but the taskbar doesn't appear and there are several black rectangles on the screen, niether mouse nor keyboard work, WIN+L causes the blue screen and rotating dots to appear. Anyone experienced the rotating dots? How did you fix them? All help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kevin
