Windows 10: Stuck on "Please wait" screen

Hi,

I tried to reinstall my uncle's old pc today and give it a fresh windows 10, but a problem occurred.

The installation went smoothly, the pc started and i went to the Windows update setting in the menu. It started downloading the 1909 update, and a few other things like net framework etc.

At some point one of the updates started going to 99% and then back to 11% a couple of times, and the screen went black. The system updated and started giving me the "please wait" screen.

It's been like this for hours..

The pc is not ancient. It's Dell think my uncle bought it in 2011. Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 2.93 Ghz, 4GB RAM.

And i have no idea what went wrong ..


Tried booting into the advanced boot menu. Tried Diagnostics, Start up repair, Safe mode, Command prompt, restarting, unplugging and whatnot - Nothing is working and it just won't boot into Windows no matter what i do.


The only option i have left is the "Reset this PC" one.

But i was reluctant to use it, since my uncle has a lot of important files on the pc.

When we installed the 10 he asked me specifically to do it by keeping all his personal files. So naturally after the installation, we got a Windows.old folder on the pc.



My question is - if i click on the "Reset" option and i chose to keep my files, will the Windows.Old folder remain untouched? Or this option only keeps files on the Windows 10 itself, and it will delete the old windows folder alongside everything else?

If i pick to roll back to the previous version of Windows 7 will i still be able to access his files?


I need to get the pc unstuck either way cause he's using it for work.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I just need to keep his old files safe.

To understand the issue better, I would like to ask some questions:

• Is the computer stuck in the Installing updates screen?
• For how long is the computer stuck in the screen?
• When was the computer last updated?
• Is the screen showing any percentage of installation?

Sometimes the installation might take a long time to install if the update is of large size. So, I suggest you to wait for sometime and check if the system boots to the desktop. If it is taking a longer time, then perform a Power Drain by following the steps
provided below:

• Shut down the Computer.
• Remove all power source (including battery if it is a laptop).
• Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
• Connect the power source and start the computer.
• After the computer boots to the desktop, suggest you to install all the pending updates.

It's possible that switching displays and inputs caused some driver conflicts in your computer, causing it to get stuck in this screen. Have you tried switching back to your old
monitor and restarting your computer to see if your computer will boot properly? If you still get stuck on this screen, we recommend using Startup Repair. To do this, follow these steps:

• 
  Press and hold the power button until the computer restarts. Do this three times in a row and you should be taken to the
  Recovery screen.
  
• 
  Click See advanced repair options.
  
• 
  Click Troubleshoot.
  
• 
  Click Advanced options.
  
• 
  Click Startup Repair.
  
• 
  If prompted, enter your credentials and click Continue.

• Do you see the “Please wait” before clicking on Sign in or after that?
• How did you upgrade to Windows 10?
• Are you using a wired or wireless connection?

I would suggest you to make sure that all the cable are connected properly for internet connection.
