  1. Stuck on "Undoing changes made to your computer" after Windows Update

Windows Update prompted me to clear some space off my drive and once I was able to it prompted me to start the update. I scheduled it for around 12 pm yesterday and it started without any issues. At one point, however it became stuck on a black screen with a circle of loading dots that read "Undoing changes made to your computer...".

I have tried multiple troubleshoots such as holding down the power button to shut it off as well as holding the volume keys (both, or one at a time) along with the power button. I have turned it off and on multiple times to try and get it to boot into safe mode and all it does it flash the Surface logo with the loading circles before going black, flashing some white bordered square, and then goes directly back to the screen that first says "Attempting to recover installation" and then "Undoing changes made to your computer" where it then stays. It refreshes itself every few minutes but just repeats the same thing over and over.

As of now I have left it on overnight and returned to find it not changed. The only thing that changed was that during one of the troubleshooting attempts the first screen with the Surface logo became red in the background and has stayed that way since.

If possible I would like to know if there is a way to fix this without having to fully wipe the tablet as I have a lot stored on there and haven't made a backup for it.

    Windows Version: Windows 10

    Thank you

    :)

Window Update Undoing changes made to your computer issue

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

In order to help you with the appropriate troubleshooting steps, pleas reply with the details requested below:

    • Do you receive any error message after Windows update?
    • May I know after which update do you see this message?
    • When you say, “this message appear about half and hour" does the computer boot to the desktop?
    • What is the make and model of the computer?

If the computer doesn’t boot to the Desktop, I would suggest you to refer the suggestions provided by DaveM121 replied on April 7, 2019 in the thread

    .

If you are able to boot the computer to the Desktop, I would suggest you to run the

    Windows Update Troubleshooter
    and see if that helps.

If the issue persists, I would suggest you to reset Windows Update components. Kindly refer the article by Sumit on

Note: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost. Also, the last step in the article
talks about Clean installation, please do not perform a clean installation of Windows.

Let us know the results, we will be glad to help you.
