Windows 10: Surface Hub Windows 10 Team 2020 Update available October 27

Earlier this year, we announced the Public Preview of the latest update to the Surface Hub Operating System, the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update.This update delivers on top customer requested features and brings new and added experiences to help customers configure, manage and collaborate on their 1st-generation Surface Hubs and Surface Hub 2S devices. Since releasing the public preview weâve seen incredible reception from our customers who have installed the update and provided valuable feedback.

Today, weâre pleased to share more information about the availability of Windows 10 Team 2020 Update, based on Windows 10, version 20H2, for all Surface Hub 2S devices, starting October 27, 2020 via Windows Update for Business.

Availability for 1st-generation Surface Hubs (55â and 84â&#157 is expected soon after, and weâll communicate as it becomes available.

The Windows 10 Team 2020 Update is a feature update â which allows IT admins to control its installation using Windows Update for Business rings, similar to your standard Windows 10 update rings. Using these rings will allow organizations to stay current with the latest security updates and provide better manageability and reliability.

A new Bare Metal Recovery (BMR) image for Surface Hub 2S will become available on October 27, 2020 as well.

As soon as we have the update ready for 1st-Generation Surface Hubs, a new and improved Surface Hub Recovery Tool (SHRT) will become available too.

For customers using Windows Update, we'll be taking a phased approach and throttle the updates by regions/countries as detailed in the following table:

Windows 10, version 1703 (RS2) reached end of servicing on October 8, 2019, except for Surface Hub which remained in support. We extended support for Surface Hub to continue to provide our customers with security and quality updates.

As we roll out the Windows 10 Team 2020 update based on Windows 10, version 20H2, the last RS2-based security update will be distributed on December 8, 2020, at which point Windows 10 Team RS2 will reach end of service for Surface Hub.

Customers currently enrolled in the Windows Insiders Program (WIP) for Surface Hub and wish to leave the program can do so by BMR/SHRT their devices. Alternatively, they can choose to remain in WIP Slow (Once Windows 10 Team RS2 reaches end of servicing, we will switch to Slow ring for Windows 10 Team 2020) or Fast to continue receiving early features of the OS.

Prepare for the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update
The recommended update path is via Windows Update or Windows Update for Business. Customers that donât allow their devices to receive updates from the internet and customers who wish to join their devices to Azure Active Directory or start on a clean slate can use the new Windows 10 Team 2020 BMR Image.

Important note on Surface Hub 2S:
When updating drivers and firmware for Surface Hub 2S, weâre updating drivers and firmware on both the compute unit (âCartridgeâ&#157 and the Touch-Display Module (TDM). It is required that both be updated at the same time to avoid driver/firmware compatibility issues. Customers should allow up to 60 minutes for the update process to complete .

Updates to the Microsoft Teams app on Surface Hub

The Microsoft Teams group announced the latest update to the Microsoft Teams app for Surface Hub recently on their blog. This update introduces new Teams features, brings back old Surface Hub features, and provides additional stability and fixes to the app.

Microsoft Whiteboard Integration

A feature that was recently introduced to Teams in preview allows integrated whiteboarding directly from the Teams app on any Windows PC.

This feature introduces the option to start a whiteboard co-authoring session with enyone that's in the meeting. There's no need to copy and paste URLs into a chat window or even invite users to the whiteboard session. The moment one user shares their whiteboard from the Microsoft Teams app, all users will automatically see the whiteboard in Microsoft Teams and everyone can work together. This isn't screen sharing. This is real-time, productive collaboration.

Whiteboard collaboration in the Teams app is not available in point-to-point Teams calls.

It's only available if you're in a scheduled meeting or if the meeting has 3 or more participants

From a Windows 10 Teams client the user will see a canvas and 4 pens on the right side on the screen:

You can also open the canvas in the Microsoft Whiteboard app:

On Surface Hub, however, the experience is even better. When anyone in the meeting initiates Whiteboard sharing, you'll be prompted to sign in to the app (if you haven't signed in before).

Signing in ensures that the whiteboard data is saved under your personal whiteboard and that you can continue to work on this canvas from any Windows 10 device.

Once signed in to the whiteboard app, you can co-author with your teammates from Surface Hub:

Auto Camera switching

The feature that was previously available only in the Skype for Business app on Surface Hub is now available in the Microsoft Teams app. Note that by default, auto camera switching is not enabled, which means you'll have to enter the Teams' app settings and set it to auto (configuration persists once set).

Additional fixes

Some of our customers reported echoes during meetings when Surface Hub joined using the Microsoft Teams app. This update fixes this issue.

If the account you're using isn't Teams enabled, the app will display a message asking your admin to enable it.

Incoming call toast behavior when the Surface Hub account is a delegate or when a call is being forwarded is fixed.

The dial pad is no longer displayed when the Surface Hub account is not enterprise- voice-enabled.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update for Surface Hub now available

Starting today, October 13th, the Windows 10 Anniversary Update for Surface Hub will be released to customers through Windows Update.

Since we began shipping Surface Hubs in March, we’ve been inspired by how customers such as Bartlitt Beck, European School of Management and Technology, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Case Western Reserve University, SHoP Architects, Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin and the Royal Academy of Music have used Surface Hub to bring their organizations together to work, create and learn.
Demand for Surface Hub is strong. To date, we have shipped to over 600 customers in 24 different countries and that number continues to grow.

Starting today, October 13th, the Windows 10 Anniversary Update for Surface Hub will be released to customers through Windows Update. The update will be released in stages with the goal to make it available to all customers by early November. As part of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update for Surface Hub, we’ve made deep investments in inking and content sharing experiences. Here are some of the great new features on their way:

Inking support across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

People love inking on Surface Hub! With this update, we are extending inking across Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This means the people can now pick up a pen to start annotating directly on their Word docs or Excel sheets on the hub. We’ve also added a “Draw” toolbar in the ribbon with a variety of inking tools.

Support for simultaneous Pen and Touch

Now people can use both hands to edit content on the fly, or use a mixture of pen and touch when multiple people are collaborating with the Surface Hub. This is possible even while several apps are open simultaneously.

Save & Recall Whiteboards directly through OneDrive

One of the most loved features of Surface Hub is the ability to send whiteboards to meeting participants via e-mail as image or OneNote file. Now, we’ve added the ability to sign in, to save and recall Whiteboards directly from OneDrive. This helps people pick up right where their last meeting ended with a simple and secure sign-in experience.

Support for 3rd party peripherals

We’ve added support for third-party peripherals to offer choice and flexibility in audio, video and microphone configuration. Our Surface Hub and Skype for Business engineering teams have successfully tested the following devices. We will continue testing across our partner portfolio in the upcoming months to confirm additional peripherals.

Improved Surface Hub Log Analytics solution on Operations Management Suite (OMS), giving a clearer view of issues to monitor and recommended remediation

Enhanced documentation about support for Windows Update for Business, allowing admins to control and stage Windows updates

Support for replicating High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) protected video content onto external monitors

New Surface Hub OS update released for public preview

Microsoft Surface Hub is an all-in-one digital whiteboard, meetings platform, and collaborative computing device powered by Windows 10. We are excited to share that the latest version of the Surface Hub operating system, Windows 10 Team 2020 Update, is now available for preview through the Windows Insider Program.

This Windows Insider Preview release delivers the latest Windows 10 features, including major improvements to device deployment and manageability, and will be available for First-generation Surface Hub 55" and for Surface Hub 2S 50". The First-generation Surface Hub 84" will be supported in the final release of Windows 10 Team 2020 Update.

What's new in Windows 10 Team 2020 Update

Improvements for Azure Active Directory Joined devices

This update addresses top customer requests, starting with full support for organizations using Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) to manage their Surface Hub devices:

Single Sign-On (SSO) for Azure AD joined devices:
When users sign in with their Microsoft 365 credentials to “My meetings and files”, their user credentials flow seamlessly from app to app – including Microsoft 365 experiences in the browser.

Conditional Access (CA) for Azure AD joined devices:
IT admins can deploy device-level security policies to their Azure AD joined Surface Hub to control access to organizational resources in accordance with corporate security and compliance requirements.

Support for non-global-admins for Azure AD joined devices:
Customers can choose a more granular set of admins within their admin hierarchy to manage Surface Hub. For more information, see Admin group management.

Improvements for device deployment and manageability

We also added features to help customers configure and manage their Surface Hub devices:

Modern authentication for cloud device accounts: Surface Hub supports Exchange Web Services (EWS) and Active Directory Authentication Library (ADAL) based authentication to connect to Exchange, allowing customers to deprecate the use of Basic authentication. For details, see Modern authentication on Surface Hub.

Over 20 new and updated mobile device management (MDM) policies: These policies give IT admins improved control over app updates from the Microsoft Store, wireless projection settings such as Miracast over infrastructure, network settings such as Quality-Of-Service and 802.1x wired authentication, and new privacy/GDPR related settings. Improvements for meeting and collaborating on Surface Hub

Finally, this update introduces significant improvements to help end-users meet and collaborate on a Surface Hub device:

Support for the new Microsoft Edge:

Customers can install the new Microsoft Edge, which has been rebuilt from the ground up to bring you world-class compatibility and performance, the security and privacy you deserve, and new features designed to bring you the best of the web. New Microsoft Edge Browser on Surface Hub

Deploy Microsoft Teams faster: Microsoft Teams is included as the default Meetings, calling and collaboration app on new Surface Hub devices which can be changed or configured via MDM or directly on Surface Hub using the Settings app. For more information, see Deploy Microsoft Teams.

Support for Proximity Join with Microsoft Teams:
Proximity Join enables users to take scheduled Microsoft Teams calls on a nearby Surface Hub using their laptop/phone, or seamlessly transition an in-progress meeting to a nearby Surface Hub. Windows 10 Team 2020 Update adds Mobile Device Management (MDM) support to configure Proximity Join, and the feature will be subsequently released as a Microsoft Teams update through Microsoft Store.

Support for Coordinated Meetings with Microsoft Teams:
In meeting rooms that feature a Surface Hub and a Microsoft Teams Room device, or spaces with two Surface Hub devices, Coordinated Meetings enable users to easily leverage both devices during a Microsoft Teams meeting. With a single tap, users can join a meeting from either device and maximize screen real estate by showing video feeds on one device, and a digital whiteboard or content on the other. Windows 10 Team 2020 Update adds Mobile Device Management (MDM) support to configure Coordinated Meetings, and the feature will be subsequently released as a Microsoft Teams update through Microsoft Store.

Passwordless sign-in using FIDO2 security keys: Using FIDO2 security keys, customers can quickly and easily sign into Surface Hub without having to type in usernames and passwords. Combined with Single Sign-On (SSO), this feature provides fast and seamless authentication to files, apps, and websites during a meeting. For more information, see Configure passwordless sign-in on Surface Hub.

Improvements to passwordless sign-in using Microsoft Authenticator: For organizations that use Azure AD, users can use the Microsoft Authenticator app to sign in without having to type in usernames and passwords. Additionally, users can sign-in using their preferred email aliases in Azure AD in addition to their User Principal Name (UPN). For more information, see Sign in to Surface Hub with Microsoft Authenticator.

Dual-pen inking on Surface Hub 2S: Users can whiteboard and collaborate side-by-side on Surface Hub 2S using two Surface Hub 2 Pens. The firmware updates required to enable dual-pen inking will be released with a subsequent update.
