^ Issue with Surface devices is that only Microsoft Signed drivers are allowed to be installed with the hardware. My system is also the Surface Pro, but the explorer crash never happened to me. I suggest to perform a system restore to the point before the issue.

  2. Thanks guys.

Callender: I think I have the most recent drivers
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/pro...-Graphics-640: Version: 15.65.4.494
    Also most recent surface firmware

    theveterans:
I have basically had this problem since day one with this machine (I just figured it would work itself out with a windows update). So no idea what version to restore to.

    Any further suggestions?

Suggest a nice CLEAN install using the latest ISO from M$....it sorted out all anomalies I had on my Surface Pro 4.
Make sure to back up all files and folders and keep separately, you can reinstall them after the clean installation.

    Clean boot?

Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Windows 10 Tutorials

Also disable any file sharing or file syncing types of programs.

Disable non microsoft context menu items (just to test)

Grab Autoruns and check entries listed in Explorer tab and experiment with disabling possible problem third arty shell extensions.

Autoruns for Windows - Windows Sysinternals | Microsoft Docs

Check for updates for any software that is displayed anywhere in the "Everything" tab of autoruns. If updates are available fully remove the old software including remnants if possible before rebooting and installing latest versions.

  6. Thanks everyone (callender, dencal, theveterans) for all of the suggestions.

I will work my way backwards starting with callender's suggestions and then work onto dencal's and the veterans approaches. And sorry for such a simple question but I assume a refresh is far simpler process than a clean install from an iso? Are there things the second will correct but not the first?
