Windows 10: Surface Pro 4 later this year with W10 installed

Surface Pro 3 is proving a lot better than anticipated (the real pro 3 not the RT thingey).
However this will surely whet your appetite --could be an Apple killer. Also will have W10 installed (apparently). The NEW Surface Pro 4.

The CPU is interesting too as it will be the "fanless" ones INTEL are now releasing -- much better power usage although how these things will be cooled is anybody's guess.

Recovery Drive Fail : Create a recovery drive fails in windows 10

This is still happening for me 2 years later. I have a Surface Pro 4 and am running Evaluation copy Build 16237 Prelease 170701-0549. No response from MS?

 

Windows 10 Update Version 1709, Surface Pro Dock and BSOD

I "allowed" installation of Windows 10 Version 1709 update on my Surface Pro 2017 late last week. At the time of the update the computer was connected to a newer Surface Pro Dock (PD9-00003)
with a Dell Monitor (U2716D), and did not seem to experience any post-update issues attached to that dock + monitor.

When I later attached to an older Surface Pro 3 Docking Station and a Dell Monitor (U3014) the Surface Pro started experiencing Blue Screens of Death (BSOD). I had been working with the Surface Pro 2017
attached to this dock for a couple of months and for years prior to that with a Surface Pro 3 and 4.

I have since replaced the Surface Pro 3 Docking Station with the same newer dock and so far everything seems okay. I post this both as an observation and a question to anyone else using a similar configuration. Have you experienced the
same BSOD?

 

If they decide to use the Core M cpus, be prepare to be underwhelmed with performance! *Sad

Over the holidays I decided to get a new W8.1 tablet/convertible and was prepared to get the Surface Pro 3.

Went to BestBuy in the Kansas City area and looked around the displays and decided that the Yoga 3 Pro was a better idea. Better pricing, VERY light and the 13.3" screen was attractive. So I bought it. Set it all up and was underwhelmed by the performance. Too laggy at times and just very irritating. Still loved the look and lightness, but the performance was worse than my SP1. So I took it back and got the SP3.

Loved the SP3 overall, but in the end the price point was too much money for not enough computer IMO. Took it back.

Got the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro, i7/8Gb/256Gb. Yeah a little heavier than the Yoga 3 Pro, but about the same weight as the SP3 with keyboard attached. Love the 16x9 screen, though I know some don't. Performance much, much better than either the Yoga 3 Pro or the SP3 i5/8Gb/256Gb. Keyboard is much better than the Type Cover and it folds back just like the Type Cover. Only downside is you can't separate the keyboard.

Unless something changes with the Core M CPUs, I wouldn't have another box with them, certainly not a premium priced one.

Oh yeah, the Yoga 2 Pro i7/8Gb/256Gb is only $999 at Lenovo's site which doesn't hurt either!!

That was a deal breaker for me -- not being able to separate the keyboard - a no no --then there was no advantage to giving up my laptop (apart from a small bit of weight).

The surface pro 3 I'm using (with the i7 and 256GN SSD) works amazingly OK and hooked into a decent monitor the display quality is awesome.

Travelling it's great to operate it in "Tablet mode" if you are say just watching a movie. The onscreen touch keyboard works fine too -- can change OK from UK ==>ISL easily enough as well or even FR-AZERTY (horrible !!!) when I'm working in Belgium.

It IS expensive - but what about all those people buying Macbooks --those are hideously expensive too --sometimes if you have the money it's OK to buy an expensive product if it does what you want.

I'm interested though in the performance of the new processor -- maybe the new SP4 is valuing "thinness" over powerfulness. I don't actually have any problems with the size of the present SP3 though and a powered USB3 hub allows me to plug in a few devices --even better is the docking station which if you really want the SP3 as a replacement for your everyday work laptop then it's essential. Hideous at 165 GBP -- why is stuff more expensive in the UK than in almost every other country I've visited(including mine which isn't the cheapest place) - most UK people while not starving aren't the best paid either. Any UK residents perhaps can answer this one. The UK does seem to have availability though when other places often don't.

I did manage to get the VAT (20%) off as I was exporting the product.

For me, the removeable keyboard turned out to be one of those 'I need it' kind of thoughts, but with the SP1 I had I never used it with the keyboard disconnected. So the reality was and is that I just fold the keyboard to the backside an I"m good to go. I'm not real fond of the onscreen keyboards. Just personal preference.

My post was primarily about the Core M performance. Reading some reviews indicate that in performance it is all over the place in performance depending on what you are doing at the time. Somewhere a bit more than an i3 but less than an i5 in most cases. That tells me it doesn't belong in the premium computer space yet.

The things that led me to the Yoga 3 Pro and Yoga 2 Pro was the screen's very high resolution and I prefer 16x9 geometry. The thing that led me to return the Yoga 3 Pro and get the Yoga 2 Pro was the laggy performance.

The look and feel of the Yoga 3 Pro is wonderful. Very light and thin and was an excellent compromise of laptop/tablet imo. Except for the performance. For all the things I liked about it, the performance was just a turnoff.

Hopefully the Core M's will get some love going forward. As it is, they are more about heat and fanless designs and less about the performance.

And yes, it is perfectly all right to buy something expensive. I've also got a MacBook Pro w/Retina, so I understand Apple's pricing which BTW, is about where MS is with the Surface line.

I've got THREE VM's (W7 with SAP IDES test system. W8.1 and W10 all running concurrently on the surface pro 3 (i7 model) and response time is great. I'm using a CENTOS 7 Linux host (you can load alternative OS'es on the surface pro 3 - you have to get into the protected boot BIOS - BRINK has a decent tutorial on that).

System isn't sluggish at all -- the windows VM's work excellently while also streaming from a shared network drive Movies and Audio to remote devices. You will need the docking station though and I'm also using a powered USB3 hub to increase the nr of external devices.

I can't see myself ever buying another laptop again if the surface pro keeps working --the convertible form factor is BRILLIANT. Now what would be great is to implement the WIRELESS INTEL display so you could use an external monitor with NO CABLES. !!!

My current laptops are used simply now as Test rigs (or a backup if the SP3 goes bonkers). They seem clunky and slow compared with the sp3 and the built in displays look HIDEOUS after the SP3.

What I would like though is for the new processor to be at least as powerful as the i7 but getting that into a small package without excessive heat and no fan is going to be a bit beyond my level of Physics or Engineering. I still understand things like old fashioned 600V DC train motors etc !!!!!.

I opted out of acquiring the SP3 when offered as I wanted to wait for the newer CPUs. Wait and see.
