Windows 10: Surface Pro 4 - Recovery not possible

Here's my problem:

I have a Surface Pro 4 (i7,8gb ram, 256gb ssd) and experienced the well-known battery issue (battery was not loading when plugged in). I tried every possible solution i found, nothing worked.

So my last hope was a fresh install using a usb recovery device and the original recovery image from the Microsoft website.

After creating the usb drive exactly as officially described, i plugged it in and started the recovery, everything went normal until the screen showing "Recovering your device XX%" got to 100% and the device rebooted.

After rebooting, the surface showed the TPM Pop-Up window, i confirmed and the Surface logo with the loading circle appeared. Then it showed "preparing" and afterwards "starting services".

At this point, the device either shut down or only the screens back light was active but the screen showed nothing.

The only option i had was again turning it on, which resulted in a standard error message.


I already used different usb devices, re-downloaded the image 3 times, used usb 2.0 and 3.0 to copy the files onto the usb, used the recovery disk utility or just copied the files and also full-formatted the usb instead of using quick format. I also tried it with and without the type cover and with or without a micro sd in the slot.


Hopefully anyone out there is able to help me out. I have literally no clue what i have left to try.

I understand your concern and will guide you in the right direction.

The main causes observed so far are driver issues, so I suggest you to install and update all the drivers and see if it helps.

Download drivers and firmware for Surface

I would also suggest you to install all Windows update and check.

Follow the steps:

1. On the search bar type “Settings”.

2. Click on “Update and Security”.

3. Click on “Check for Updates”.

4. Read and accept the license terms, and then tap or click Finish if the update requires it.
