He cannot get any other device, because the Gateway he has connects to the ONT to allow the user to have TV, Phone and Internet at the Gateway, just like AT&T does for their U-Verse Service.

HIs only choice if he wants to place his own equipment behind that required Gateway, is to use DMZ Plus and attach a "Edge" Router, which is how I have mine set up. There is nothing wrong with the gateway that is provided. He can use any Access Point that he wants with it and turn off the Wifi side, but he still has to use the one that Verizon has to use to attach to the ONT to provide them service.

You have no other choice but to use the Gateway that Verizon requires for their FiOS service when you have a ONT that needs this Gateway you were given. You can turn off wifi on it and put on your own Access Point. But you cannot change it out for some Cable modem or eMTA.

Resetting that Gateway also messes with the Verizon equipment and the ONT. That means you are creating nothing but headaches for yourself. I really doubt that it is Verizon equipment. It is changes that you have made and trying to get Wifi in areas of the house, without having additional Access Points to expand the footprint.

Wifi is not being used. Just on a hunch, I thoroughly went over the menus on those security programs previously mentioned and removed the check mark on any that appear to suggest that the programs are still monitoring the web sites. So now I have seen a big improvement in connectivity. I hope it is not temporary.
Now I will only run these other programs when I am offline and with my Norton program temporary disabled. So I'll see what happens in the next day or two.

If you are making changes in the Fios Gateway, you are just going to keep having issues. There is no need to go in and change a bunch of Firewall rules, unless you need to open a port in the Firewall, which would be Stealth.

Regardless if you are using Wifi or not. I was pointing out to the OP what the unit does and is capable.

You also need to get the Norton Security uninstaller. Norton, McAfeee and other so called system security programs are worthless when you are on your own LAN, and also cause more headaches. You do not need Norton, since the Fios Gateway uses IPTables and has very good rules in not letting items in.

The only reason to use a Firewall on a device is if you are traveling and do not want to always turn off shared folders, the Firewall can go from Private LAN to Public, when you take the device off of your network.

Dump Norton, leave Windows Firewall off, you can use Chrome or Firefox with AdBlock plus to block any ad's that may be possible Malware delivery systems, watch what you are downloading, what attachments in emails you are opening and along with safe web browsing.

I would recommend uninstalling every third party antivirus/anti-malware/firewall program and just let Windows Defender handle it. I've got 12 computers at my house and 4 users, and 2 of the computer users are pretty much only point and click computer users. I get about 1 computer infected with malware per year and has required nothing more than a thorough hard drive cleaning with Windows built-in disk cleanup and CCleaner to remove it from temporary internet files. On the other hand, every computer that I have had to reload Windows on for friends because they have been seriously infected have been running all kinds of anti-everything programs.

After removing all those useless anti-everything programs, if your internet connection still drops and resetting the modem/router fixes it, then call your ISP - which sounds like is Verizon.

Quit trying to add protection program on top of protection program, quick trying to change every setting you can find on the internet and go back to the basics.

  6. Thanks NavyLCDR & bro67.
Sounds like good advice. Now that I thought about it, I can recall some years ago, I did not have these problems with just windows defender. It looks like I had an over zealous attitude towards protecting my computer.
I will remove all these programs and save some money and just keep windows defender.

If all that you want is a decent free Anti-Malware and do checks when you want to, just use MalwareBytes. It is a good program for when you want to scan the system. Defender in the next version of Redstone is going to become more robust and will start being at a higher level in getting better signature databases to keep on top of the different variants.

There are some templates for Windows Firewall. They are mostly for those who want to have a machine that is for a specific task and do not want rogue users trying to get in.

Just follow safe browsing, keep folder shares off or password protected with a strong password, same as your account.
