Windows 10: Swapping SSDs between laptop and desktop

Discus and support Swapping SSDs between laptop and desktop in Windows 10 Ask Insider to solve the problem; I'm looking to swap the SSD from my laptop (512GB) with the SSD in my desktop (256GB).     Swapping SSDs between laptop and desktop


    I'm looking to swap the SSD from my laptop (512GB) with the SSD in my desktop (256GB). Both have windows already installed and contain different files. I'm having a tough time figuring out whether or not this will work, so any advice would be appreciated!

    1. Create a clone of Desktop SSD to 1TB internal desktop HDD
    2. Create a clone of Laptop SSD to External HDD
    3. Swap SSDs

    The next steps from here are what I'm unsure about. Would I be able to re-install Windows/cloned files from the respective drives, or would I need to use a cloning software again? Thanks in advance!

    ok i think i got it. so i wont be able to just swap it. i will have to backup all my data, then swap ssd to desktop and format it, then reinstall my previous version of windows 7 pro, then update that to sp1 and then upgrade to windows 10 and then copy all
    my data back to the ssd that would now be in the desktop.

    is that right? i just want to make sure i am following the rules. i like windows 10 alot and just want to make sure i am doing the migration right

    I have a dell inspiron n5040 and i want to put the ssd in it into my desktop. I custom built my desktop and would rather have the ssd in it. Could i just take out the ssd from the laptop and put it
    in my desktop and all will be fine? I realize i will need to install the drivers and such which is no problem. Any insight would be appreciated.
