    System Restore files disappear when system volume cloned or restored


    Is this behaviour intentional by Microsoft? No information is presented as a warning so unless the user examines the System Restore feature after a Windows 10 system volume is cloned or recovered, that user will be oblivious. System recovery files will apparently not subsequently be created unless the user intervenes to re-enable System recovery. This behaviour is absent from Windows 8.1.

    Hi. I noticed this also if I restore with Macrium Reflect as an example all System Restore points are wiped out. Then I just manually create a new restore point.

    If you are using the Microsoft built in 'Backup & Restore (Windows 7)' to create and restore a system image then yes, this behaviour is intentional. In addition to leaving out the restore points, you'll also find that the Update History in Settings > Windows Update has been cleared (installed updates are still listed in Control Panel though).

    But you shouldn't still be using the MS system imaging, it was deprecated four years ago with MS recommending you use something else.

    Third party imaging solution like Macrium Reflect will also leave out system restore points by default, though a forensic sector-by-sector image/clone will copy them.
