  1. System Restore will not turn on

Hi there. Got a strange situation on a newly configured win 10 machine. On the PC properties, System protection does not show the actual drive Windows is on. 'System Protection' is greyed out. In 'Configure' I can not remove the 'Disable system protection'. When I go to services, volume shadow was turned to 'manual'. I asked it to be 'automatic'. No change. In the registry, there is no tab for 'restore' under Local Machine/software/policies/microsoft/windowsNT. How can I correct this situation? Of course I am logged in as administrator. Thanks in advance for your help.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 will not restore from system image on DVD

System Image is partially broken under Windows 10. You might have to mount the system image then manually restore your files from it.

  3. Windows 10 will not restore from system image on DVD

Hi Rep. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Windows imaging doesn't work well and is being phased out. In the future I'd use the expert's choice free Macrium to save the backup externally (never to disk which fails frequently) and also for file backup. It just works:

    https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/7363/macrium-re...

    http://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOW/B...

For now following the illustrated steps in this link which compile the best possible Clean Install of Windows which will stay that way as long as you stick with the tools and methods given, has zero reported problems, and is better than any amount of money
    could buy:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Skip the Product Key during install and it will activate afterwards with the Digital License permanently assigned to the PC when you first activated the Upgrade.

If you inserted a Windows 8.1 Product Key then it likely messed up activation because to activate properly with the DL when it connects to the internet, it must have the default version key in place and none other:

    http://winaero.com/blog/generic-key-to-install-...

The old Product Key is only used to initiall activate and claim the Digital License, never to reactivate which is done online connected to MS Activation servers which checks the hardware signature to reactivate.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

System Restore will not turn on

Hi, if your problem relates to VSS, this can be relatively intractable.
    See:
    Can't enable System Restore

    (I searched the forum for
    System Restore greyed out
for you - you can find more results if needed).

You can try this guide: (it comes from Macrium, but troubleshoots VSS)
How to troubleshoot Microsoft Volume Shadow copy Service errors (VSS)

Note that Macrium Reflect does include a tool that attempt to fix VSS problems.
You'll find a reference in this huge thread
    Macrium Reflect Backup Failures
which ends up with an in-place upgrade repair install to fix the VSS problems.

  5. Thanks, Dalchina. Adding the registry key with the link 'Can't enable System Restore' did the trick. It worked immediately after that. Appreciate your help.
