  1. 'System Sounds' in the volume mixer keeps unmuting and resetting itself to 100%

I just did a clean install of Windows 10 20H2 on a new disk and applied the latest updates and drivers. The only applications I have installed at the moment are Chrome and Discord.

Whenever I adjust the 'System Sounds' in the volume mixer and then close the volume mixer, soon it will reset back to 100% and it will even unmute itself.

I can recreate this bug most of the time by doing the following:

    1. Open the volume mixer
    2. Adjust System Sounds to 5% or mute completely
    3. Close the volume mixer
    4. Open the volume slider by clicking on the speaker icon in system tray
    5. Click the slider button (so it pings with an alert sound)

I checked with a friend via Discord screenshare to see if the same would happen on their end and it did. He was even convinced that this was a feature of clicking on the slider button, which seems a bit odd to me.

I've already googled quite a bit and tried most setting changes to no avail... I was using Windows version 1909 before this and never had the system sounds change its volume.

Wondering if anyone here is familiar with this issue or can try to recreate it on their system?

Any recommendations for solving this are appreciated!

  2. Volume Mixer Shows Sound Muting and Unmuting

As of recently I've been experiencing some sound problems. At first it showed my volume unmuting and muting very quickly when I wasn't doing anything. I did some troubleshooting and it told me that "opening audio enhancements might help", and
gives me an option to open or to not open it. I did, and I messed about with it and fixed the problem. However, I am now experiencing the same problem in a different format: the sound keeps muting for a while then unmuting. I tried doing the same thing I did
before to no avail. The normal volume slider didn't show itself muting, so I opened up volume mixer and it showed all my apps muted. I did not do this. I unmuted them all, but Google Chrome seems to keep muting itself back and then unmuting itself, then muting
itself etc. It mutes at 1-2 second intervals. I scoured the internet for solutions, and it seems that many have been experiencing this problem. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing my sound drivers - nothing. Troubleshooting continues to show "opening
audio enchancements might help" and most internet suggestions do not work. What do I do?

    System Sound Volume

Windows 10. System Sound volume. I turn it down using the "Volume Mixer." Everything works as expected. Until I close the volume mixer. Then System Sound goes back to 100%. The only way I have found to turn it back down to the desired volume it is to OPEN
the volume mixer. As long as "Volume Mixer" is open, the system sound volume stays at what I set it at. But if I ever close the Volume Mixer, or restart my computer, it's right back to 100%!

Is there something I'm missing? How do I keep they system sound volume down? It's like a zombie or the hero in an action movie! No matter what I do, it keeps rising up to maximum power!!!!

'System Sounds' in the volume mixer keeps unmuting and resetting itself to 100%

Windows 10 Volume Mixer fails to keep System Sounds muted over Remote Desktop Connection

    The problem:

after having muted the System Sounds on the remote desktop machine, it shall unmute itself after several seconds. This pattern is persistent.

    The physical setting:

I use my laptop at work, and use Remote Desktop Connection to access my desktop machine left in my apartment.

    The software setting:

I have enabled Remote audio through the Remote Desktop Connection, and chose Remote audio playback --> Play on this computer. Thus, I get audio streaming on my laptop at work.

    My attempt:

I have tried to find a way to mute System Volumes through a shortcut, and the following pages appears to be helpful:

    1. HowToGeek suggested to create a shortcut with the following executable command:

      “C:\Path\To\nircmd.exe” mutesysvolume 2
    2. The same source also points me to the shortcut for opening the Volume Mixer. %SystemRoot%\System32\SndVol.exe. Yet, I failed to find a stable way to mute System Sounds through AutoHotKey.

The problem for the suggested approach is that, on Windows 10, nircmd.exe no longer take the option "mutesysvolume 2" as designed. Instead of toggling the System Volumes, it is toggling the Device Volume. This is different from what the specs have suggested: NirCmd - Windows command line tool
