Technician of Microsoft or unscrupulous fraudster ?

    Hello everyone,

I got a phone from someone (who spoke very bad english) telling me he was a MICROSOFT technician. Wow! Is that possible that Microsoft uses a phone (USA → Europe) to contact a little private home customer ? I do not think so.
This person complained that my computer was causing big problems at Microsoft because it was "invilibly" used by hackers.
To prove that he called from MICROSOFT, he gave me my personal license ID-number that only MICROSOFT could now (but it's not thrue : my computer seller knows it also !).
By the way, maybe to scare me, he asked me to open the event log (events observer)l → administration events.

As with everyone, many advertisements and errors are listed in that journal. Most of them come from MsInstaller (event ID 11316).

This person then explained that all these messages were proof that my computer was "used" by hackers and that I had to erase all these files (which files? There is no mention of file in this log! ). I replied that I could not physically erase "nonexistent" files.

But no problem: he asked me to go to the address "https://secure.logmeinrescue.com/Customer/Code.aspx" and to log with a code that he gave me.

However, not convinced at all that this person is a Microsoft technician, I refused to go further because I knew that the program "Rescue by Logme" gave the hand on my computer to whom gave his code. I then asked him to give his personal email address to Microsoft and he told me that he would send the policy and cut off my license number. So I would understand that he was from MICROSOFT and... he ended the call.

A few minutes later, I received another call from a "MICROSOFT woman" telling me that because I was refusing to fix the problem, my license ID number would be erased, either: end of Microsoft services like Windows!

I then asked her personal email address at Microsoft to send him an email and get a new code for the "Secure Me" link. She asked me a moment to look for this information (how not to know her own email address ???) and the communication was interrupted!

Well ... what do you think of this stuff? Was my correspondent a representative of Microsoft?

    Thank you for your opinions

    :)

    Computer Technician Code of Ethics

Hey, Im writing a page for my coworkers that is to assist them with diagnosing and repairing computer problems over the phone. The first page of the site is going to be for Explaining the ethics of being a computer technician. The big thing here is to make sure that the agent understands the ethics of computers and that it is logical. Any suggestions?

I was thinking of obvious ones like : Never lie to the customer. Always make sure that the customer understands what you are doing....
