Windows 10: "The CPU isn't supported" error true or not

For what its worth...SUPPOSEDLY...the MS Windows 10 first MAJOR post launch updates aka "repairs or fixes" are getting downloaded as we speak!

Maybe by July, 2016,Win 10 might just be functional, but if you don't have the FREE O.S. by 7/29/16....you will have to pay $$$$$$$!
And, by he looks of it....the public will have to PAY, one way or another! *Huh

Very interested to read peterb yesterday.
Probably flogging a dead horse trying to get my approx. 10 year old Dell Inspiron to run windows 10.
Was amazed when I ran bcdedit /set nx alwayson as adminsistrator and it completed successfully as I did not think the machine had NX. Rebooted and was unsurprised on trying to upgrade to Win 10 to get the "This computer cannot run Win 10 message."
Just tried again without a reboot with same result but wondering why bcdedit /set nx alwayson succeeded if (since??!) it has no NX?!

Probably my naivety but possibly something akin to, "..it cannot be off if it isn't there" or the suchlike.
Would still be fascinated to know. The processor is a mobile Pentium 4 2.8ghz unit.

It may be that the CPU supports it, but your BIOS does not. We would need to know the exact model of the CPU, and the system you were upgrading.

 

Thanks for your response Mystere. She is running win 7 pro sp1 32 bit.
The cpu is a Pentium 4 518 Prescott, socket 478 mp98, 90nm, core vid 1.388v. driver 6.1.7600.16385
it has the "latest" A08 bios (last updated 3 Nov 2011)
She is looking at me longingly and a youngster at heart. Is there any hope for the old girl please?

Might be something in the BIOS settings you can change.

Seems strange that this machine apparently won't run W10 when some quite small Netbooks will !!!!!.

Most of the CPU extensions required are for running the 64 bit OS --the 32 bit one should run on just about ANYTHING. You must have though at least 1GB RAM (preferably more).

My experience is that often Error messages can be quite confusing as the message that is issued often isn't the real cause of the problem -- often there's an underlying problem further up the line.

Try disabling things like AHCP if you have it and enable as many legacy options in the BIOS as possible.

Not sure this is an option Jimbo. Have tried to upload screenshots of 6 (limited and I cannot see any advanced options) bios pages from computer but when I click ok the box disappears. The pages are: 1 Basic info, 2 Boot order, 3 Boot/wirelss/basic device config, 4 Battery, 5 Power menu, 6 Security/passwords. Cannot see AHCP or any legacy settings. Does this mean it is a dead duck or is there likely to be any other bios rather than that on the Dell website, and if I try to load it could it wreck the old gal?

Looking back over the thread, I'm confused as to how many systems you are referring to.

A Pentium 4 518 does not support the execute disable (also known as NX) bit, so Windows 10 is not an option. (Also, no 64 bit instruction set.)

Socket 478? Jeepers. You might as well be trying to install 10 on a 286 machine.

 

Well, the poor old girl is a dead duck then although was only trying with 32 bit. Was looking elsewhere at a patch with a bit of code which purportedly had a workaround for the bypassing the cpu spec test and another involving Jimbo relating to a similar question regarding Win 8 with a 3ghz Pentium 4 chip where it appears there was success upgrading to win 8 first and then Win 8.1.

Am not sending her to the crusher yet!! There is a little determination within me to achieve the impossible if possible!!!

I'm not expert on the history of Intel CPUs, but a little web searching indicates that Pentium 4 CPUs that supported NX were introduced in 2004. They may, however, all been "Socket T" (LGA 775) chips.

Win 7 X32 is probably the latest OS that should be installed on that old PC. However, I have no idea whether what I'd call the "extra" requirements (NX, SSE2, etc.) are really required for the proper operation of 10, or simply stuff Microsoft threw in to take older CPUs off the list of what they'd have to support. (The requirements actually began with Win 8.1.) If you can hack it onto a relic like an old Socket 478 machine, let us know.

I still have and continue to use my 12 year old DELL Inspirion 8600 Laptop! In fact.....4 weeks ago I installed Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit......Replacing Windows XP Pro!! (Finally)It has been working FLAWLESSLY!
It has saved my A_ _ several times!
Everybody jokes about it being 12 years old but yet always ask to use it when their computers have issues!
Do I care about Win 10? All the nightmares I'm hearing.... I think not!*sarc
I'll flog that dead horse......as long as it keeps working!
I've maxed out the RAM, upgraded the Vid card, Sound card and added a better cooling fan!

My old girl has been running Win 10 pro 32 bit happily for some little while now but has no upgrades like your smart dame. I literally only use her for resetting and testing Devolo powerline networking plugs (not sure if you have that make in California but plenty of folk of German descent in the film industry so maybe).

Just making my gal breakfast in bed so she knows I love her!

Sorry this is late response but "I've overfilled my plate" as they say, meaning "to much on it and not enough time to do it all!"
Anyway to my knowledge we do not use Devolo adapters but do have internet available VIA power outlets! In fact I have "Slinglink TURBO" which was supplied by the carrier of my intrernet service! I believe AT&T uses the Devolo adapters for the movie industry in Hollywood,CA and but where I work, we have the Linksys (CISCO) PLEK 500 AV2
I do use my Inspirion 8600 for a veriety of work and a lot more compared to my other computers even my Apple Desktop!
Why?... simply because IT'S DEPENDABLE! and I could care less what anybody says! But in a pinch...the same hecklers come "whinning" to ask if they can borrow my Inspiron!
DELL Inspirion 8600 with Win 7.......great little machine!*Cool I'll use it until it just STOPS!

Win 10 for many is a........complete NIGHTMARE!*Rolleyes SO....I think I'll wait!

Hello! It is possible to hack some system files (ntoskrnl.exe, winload.exe and some more) and bypass the NX/PAE check so you can install Windows 8 or 8.1 32-bit in an old Pentium 4, or even a Pentium III, but the latter will be too slow to be useful. The same trick works for Windows 10 32-bit, I have tried it, but the problem in Windows 10 is that you get an error message that the digital signature or ntoskrnl.exe is invalid and have to press a key to select the Advanced Startup Options, and then 7 to disable signature enforcement (test mode). This happens AT EVERY restart! No matter what I tried, in order to load Windows 10 I had to select the Advanced Startup Options and disable signature enforcement (test mode) EVERY time. As you can imagine, it is rather annoying. But when in Windows 10, they did work without any perceivable compatibility issue.

For anyone interested, the process involves to boot with Windows 7 DVD and when at Setup screen press SHIFT+F10 to get a command prompt. Then you use diskpart to wipe the disk clean, create a primary partition and format to NTFS. Next you use the imagex.exe utility to extract the Windows 10 Setup files from install.wim to the hard disk. This is like starting the Windows Setup and getting to the point of the first restart. Before you do anything else, you use a utility to patch the relevant system files to bypass NX/PAE checks and also enable both CPU threads in hyperthreading. Having patched the system files, you restart the computer from the hard disk, NX/PAE tests are bypassed so Setup resumes and goes to the next stage. The problem is that after Setup is complete, every new restart you have to select the Advanced Startup Options and then to disable signature enforcement (test mode). So it is best avoided to install Windows 10. Windows 8 will boot to the desktop without having this issue (just enable test mode permanently) but you may need to re-patch the system files after every Windows Update, if they are replaced.


My advice: Stay with Windows 7 32-bit to avoid any issues. If you want to do it, at least install Windows 8.1 so you don't get the annoying boot sequence every time. Install Windows 10 at your own risk.

PS 1: Warning! If there is no WDDM driver for your graphics card (at least Vista driver), you will be stuck with Microsoft Basic Display Adapter (basic display, NO ACCELERATION). Windows 8 and 10 do not allow installing Windows XP graphics driver (XPDM). So stay with Windows 7 that will accept an XPDM driver. Windows 8 and 10 demand a WDDM driver, or you get basic graphics only. No effects, no games, not even the screensaver will work! Beware!

PS 2: Hacking the files to upgrade Windows 7 to 10 is far more complicated, almost impossible, so forget it! I did upgrade once from Windows 7 to 8 but I tried too many things to remember exactly what worked.

 

I joined this forum to say thank you. So simple and so very silly of Microsoft. I have a Core 2 Duo P8600 CPU in a Lenovo SL500 Lpatop and kept getting NX not present errors despite coreinfo.exe saying all was good.
