Windows 10: The new Skype for Web is here

Skype has always been about bringing people together. We continue to be driven by the opportunity to connect our global community of hundreds of millions of users, empowering them to feel closer and achieve more together. We are pleased to announce the launch of the new Skype for Web. You can now enjoy our latest features from any desktop (Windows 10 and Mac OSX10.12 or higher) with the latest versions of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

Here’s a look at the latest features on Skype for Web:

HD video calling—Experience HD in one-to-one or group video calling, now with call reactions.

Call recording—Capture special moments in a Skype call with your loved ones or record important meetings with colleagues.

Notifications panel—Grab a cup of coffee and catch up on what you’ve missed in your notifications panel. Click the bell icon to see reactions to your messages, @mentions in group conversations, or if someone quoted you—all in one central place. Just click a message in the notifications panel to jump into the conversation.

Find within conversations—You can now easily find messages in the current conversation by typing the word or phrase you want to find in the search box.

Chat Media Gallery—Looking for the link or photo sent a few weeks ago? The Chat Media Gallery makes it easy to find files, links, and photos shared in a conversation, whether it was yesterday or last month. No more scrolling through your chat history—just click Gallery under the chat name to see all the files, links, and photos in the conversation.

In addition, today we are releasing the updated MSI distributable for Skype (version 8) for Windows desktop, which replaces the existing MSI distributable of Skype (version 7) for Windows desktop. If you are an IT administrator, simply download the new MSI file to start distributing the latest version of Skype to your organization via the distribution software of your choice.

Web cam on Skype

Hi Martha,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Have you updated the drivers for the web cam?

Does this issue occur only on Skype?

I suggest you to install the attest drivers from the manufacturer website and check if it helps.

To install the driver updates follow the below steps.

Open run command window( Windows key + R) and type devmgmt.msc

Right click on driver and select update driver software.

If the driver updates are not available install it from manufacture website.

Please reply to us with the status of the issue.

New Skype Version Released

Although, not one of my favourite programs, Skype is considered a high priority software application. The latest 3.5.0.239 release, is now available for download and it fixes some major bugs:

bugfix: Links with invalid % encodings were executed

bugfix: Data execution protection may have crashed Skype

bugfix: Pressing escape did not end call

Security improvements to ensure it is no longer possible to shut down Skype from a web page

What's new?

New contacts panel: You've been asking for more control and customizability over your contacts, and we believe this is an important first step in giving you just that! Available for Insiders who are on 8.35.+ builds.

People You May Know: This feature suggests people to you based on mutual contacts you've added or chatted with on Skype.

Video Messages limits are now 3 minutes!

Possibility to add phone number to Skype contact.

Skype Presence Updates: We have brought back the highly requested Away state and added a new state, Recently active! Now at a quick glance you can see if your contact is online or not. If the contact is Offline you won't see a presence indicator on his/her avatar.

What's fixed?

Linux: Skype Preview 8.36 contains various fixes and improvements along with major Electron update. It should fix the issue Skype doesn´t start on Debian 9 / 10 / OpenSUSE.

Improve empty states that drive first action through adding contacts or starting a conversation.

Call UX accessibility: Add in-app shortcuts to query and announce local camera and mute status.

Simplify composing experience on Desktop by providing a consistent UI where users can intuitively share content (for Desktop & Web).

Heads up, we roll out small updates to preview builds as we get them ready for the general public. We'll keep this post updated as new features and bug fixes are rolled out. You can always see the current version numbers in the Skype Flight Hub.

Please note also builds are released slowly over time so you might not see new builds right away on all of your devices. If we ever stop a rollout because of the feedback you've provided, we'll let you know.
