The problem with settings is that it doesn't do half of the things Control Panel does. I don't mind if Control Panel is removed IF you can put an icon on the desktop for settings and the make Settings more flexible, with greater tools.

Removing control panel is just another way of eliminating user tools. *Sad

Search does behave sensibly here, so searching for 'Restore', 'Lock', 'saver' 'personalisation' works.
I guess the idea would be to never present everything (or at least a lot as in much more in the old control panel) at one time in 1 place, but rather expect people to know what to search for.

I have the old control panel expanded from my Classic Shell start menu.. I guess that convenience will be lost.

[Remember when help actually existed, and had links to useful things... ]

  5. It is a bit of a mess at the moment with some stuff still in Control Panel and some moved to Settings. If stuff gets lost on the way from one to the other that won't be good. I like the functionality of control panel and wouldn't want to lose any of it. I'm all for moving everything to Settings, just don't dumb it down in the process. It will be frustrating at first trying to find stuff, but the more you poke around the easier it will get. You'll start remembering where stuff is. There are a lot of options/icons in control panel I never ever touch. Most of what I access I can get to with the Start Button right click menu anyway.

I agree. Simply offering an alternative to help the learning curve. Then, of course, there is here... ask question, be as specific as possible. Someone among us may, will help.....

  7. I think that it's a great idea. Control Panel has always look too cluttered. This is Risky though as people in IT would be pissed.

So long as MS move everything to Settings, before removing Control panel, Losing no functionality, all will be good.
Having only 1 option means we will soon get used to where everything is, rather than flitting between Control panel and settings.

It would be OK with everything in one place. I hope they just place another Icon in Settings for the CP or for the stuff in the CP.

  10. I'll believe it when I see it (maybe).

People complained about the Control Panel/Settings setup during the W8 Previews (Sept 2011).

W8 was foisted on the public almost 3 years ago (Oct 2012).
MS has had plenty of time to move the CP "icons" to the new phone-style Settings window.

So putting everything in one place

Sounds to me like Control Panel, DoHHHH,
Yes tablets, phones and PC's work in different ways,
God have you tried to get NEARLY directly to a setting on a tablet or a phone, at least control panel would give you a shortcut

For me it doesn't matter whether it's Settings or Control Panel. But my fear is the same as with all programs or menus that have been replaced by a more modern app or menu: Such a transition always comes with a loss of features, sometimes very drastic, sometimes only minor. If this continues we will eventually be stuck with something that is not that far from the Apple environment. Locked down, limited possibilities to tweak it to your liking... just not what I've always liked Windows for.

This has come up before, at the moment there are 62 settings in 9 places, sooner or later I will find the one I want. What's left in control panel are 44 icons, at least they are all on one page.
