Windows 10: The old Control panel may soon be gone

Discus and support The old Control panel may soon be gone in Windows 10 News to solve the problem; Agree, Cliff. We know that is one of the main reasons why MS created WinRT. We know many more, but I don't think it's worth the effort addressing those... Discussion in 'Windows 10 News' started by Burgurne, Oct 9, 2015.

Is that why you stay over here?*chuckle I have used so many different OS's(except Apples, only because I haven't had a chance yet) and the desktop's and settings are myriad, there is no best, only getting used to(finger memory). until the developers change it, which is their own right. They just about all had search features to find or get what I'm looking for. It's like being at a night club, why walk up to the bar, when the waitress/waiter will bring me my beer?

MS will do want they want to, I do not care where they place the CP and long as everything in it is accessible.

  6. Pressing the *Start key on the keyboard and right clicking it on the screen are two different menus. I was actually responding to the post before yours, I just type too slow. *Wink The right click gets you the same power menu HippsieGypsie posted.

Look, I'm glad you're supportive of Microsoft's little "SkyNet" idea. If you think it will work, go ahead.

Micro$oft's ultimate goal is to remove the ability to install desktop programs and lock the OS to the "Windows Store", like Windows RT, iOS, and Android. Microsoft no longer cares about selling operating systems like they used to (why do you think Windows 10 is a free upgrade???). They're now going into the 1st party software businesses. Notice how Office 2013/2016 are subscription-only?
(Yes I know you can buy it one time but it's a rip off, don't get me started). Have you noticed how the whole goal of Windows 8 and Windows 10 was to increase Windows Phone's marketshare? Again, we know Microsoft doesn't care about Windows anymore. In Windows 8 (and even more so in Windows 10), Microsoft is heavily pushing their "metro apps" idea to get users to buy a Windows Phone instead of an iOS/Android device, but also to incentivise developers to make "apps" for that particular OS . That's where Microsoft sees their future. Mobile OSes. Remember, Windows 10 is the last version of Windows.

bobjoe is maybe a bit extreme thinking MS could successfully freeze out third party programs. But they may force such programs to be channeled through MS Store in Win10 in the future. That would be one way to monetise windows. I don't really care if I buy my Photoshop from Adobe or via MS so long as MS don't try to rip me off.

I don't know where you're getting your information but I have a copy of Office 2013 and I don't need a subscription to use it.. really. And where do you get the idea that MS want's to lock out "all" desktop programs?? You mean tools to code Python and other languages would be included?? Third party office suites??

    Care to elaborate??

They can't do that. There are many open source tools that are free and MS can't add them to the store, the creator has to.

  11. Desktop programs aren't going anywhere. Industry will not stand for it. Period. Microsoft makes way to much money from corporate customers to lock them out of installing their own software. You can't just think consumers and phone, there is way more to Microsoft than that. Sales of Windows and office to consumers just sweetens the pot. The real money for them is in corporate licenses etc.

Yes it is. Anyone can use what they choose. Haven't read anywhere written in stone that MS will totally drop the CP. Pure speculation, although it seems to point that way as with a lot of features.

Yes, and I should have added that for mouse and touch users. Thanks for that.

  15. Maybe I'm missing something, but I'd be completely lost as how to how to set up some things without the ease of use with the 'old familiar' Control Panel.

I completely agree that there should only be the one interface, so let's ditch the 'Settings' in preference to the Control Panel.

IMHO, the only reason that uS has gone the Setting route is to make it look like Apple's OS.
