The Photos app fills up the disk by downloading online-only pictures from OneDrive

I have a bunch of pictures stored on my OneDrive-synced Pictures folder using "Protected folders". The Photos app keeps downloading all pictures to local storage, until the C: is completely full less than 30MB free. The attributes for all these files is changed from "online only" to "locally available." Changing the attributes back to "online only" recovers some space, but then the Photos app downloads the files again... This is a severe problem as this makes the system essentially unusable.

I opened https://aka.ms/AA398vh more than one year ago, and again today two computers went nuts due to a full C: drive caused by this issue.

    Microsoft, are you listening ?

    :)

Thanks for getting back to me.

The setting was "on", I've switched it to "off."

I will report back on whether this stops the unwanted downloads from taking place.

If this does, then I think the Photos app should be modified so that it only shows thumbnails for all those pictures based on access to the OneDrive data,
without actually downloading the files to disk, and performs downloads
only when the pictures are actually viewed.

Any idea on how to stop the Photos apps from doing that until Microsoft comes up with a fix? (Feedback sent at

Stop Photo-App downloading ALL Onedrive photos

    Hi,

the Photos app has indexed all my pictures in the onedrive-Folder. OK.

Then I made them "Online available" to safe disk space.

Every week, onedrive begins to download all my pictures. This are 200 GB of data.

It seems, the photos app tries to reindex all the folders again and initiates the download.

    How can I stop this?
