Windows 10: There are 44 pages for replies to the problem "Can't type in Windows 10 search bar" -- and...

For an un-related reason, I've had to re-install win10 about 100 times in the past few weeks and I've managed to do this to myself more times than I've enjoyed. This thread [https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_cortana-winpc/cant-type-in-windows-10-search-bar/7dce8411-8671-4d3e-90d1-b9bdc0aa4734?page=44] was recently locked -- Feb of this year, for whatever reason -- and a lot of suggestions to run a crazy overkill powershell script that basically re-installs everything from the app store ....


The answer, at least in my case for the last five times ... was as simple as ... Re-enable theTouch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service. Why in the heck it's needed to type in only certain places, you're guess is as good as mine ... but the dead giveaway in that 44 page thread was those few folks who noticed ctfmon.exe, when running, resolved the problem.


I had gone a bit crazy disabling services [win 10 has way, way, way ... way way way did I emphasize that enough? services out of the box], and unlike windows 7, doesn't seem possible to get 'stable' in the sense that you can make it just sit there and do nothing when you aren't doing anything. For whatever reason, MS decided that your PC should be really busy, all the time. Can many of the modern processors handle it? Sure. Does that make it OK?


Not IMO.


...anywho -- I hope this help someone and at the same time saves them from having to flip through 44 pages of replies like I'm sure many of us in the past already have. And of course if you have any other follow up questions, don't hesistate.

not able to type in the search bar

Hi Rene,

If you meant the Cortana search bar, review the suggested solutions on these threads:

• Can't type in Windows 10 search bar.
• Can't type anything in Win 10 Apps (Cortana, Search, Calculator, Feedback, etc.)

Trouble with search bar (won´t find data)

Hi Jan,

I Would suggest you follow the steps below and see if it helps:

Step 1: On the Search bar type “cmd”. Right Click on the Command Prompt option and select Run as Administrator. (If prompted for a password, type the password and click Allow)

Step 2: DISM TOOL

• Type Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
  and click Enter.
• Type Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
  and click Enter.
• Type Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  and click Enter.

Search bar stuck while trying to type in the search bar

We would like to know more information regarding your concern so that we will know why the search bar is not working. Have you recently made any changes/updates prior to this issue?

Did you run the troubleshooter to rebuild the indexing? If not, I would suggest that you run the troubleshooter to fix common indexing issue. You can run the troubleshooter by performing these steps:

• Press the Windows key on your keyboard and type
  Troubleshoot.
• Choose Troubleshoot in the results.
• Under Find and fix other problems highlight
  Search and Indexing then click Run the troubleshooter.
