    Thermal Shutdown confusion

I will say this up front. I have over 18 years of computer repair experience, but I've never come across an issue like this. I HAVE read other threads talking about this, but none of them contained the issue that is relevant to me.

    Now. the problem:
I was given a laptop and was told it had "some sort of problem" and if I can fix it, I can keep it, or just use it for parts. So I turn on the computer and it get the

"the system bios has detected that your note book pc was put into hibernation or shut down to avoid overheating may occur if the cooling vents are blocked or the operating temperature exceeds the specifications the notebook pc should return to normal operation once the situation is resolved

    system temperature 90D

    enter - continue start up"

Now when I press enter, at first it will start up, go to the desktop, but after about 60 seconds it will turn itself off, and any subsequent attempts to turn it on will bring up the same error but then turn off immediately unless I leave it for about 30 minutes.

Sounds self explanatory right? However... The machine itself doesn't feel hot, or even warm, I've opened the machine and cleaned out all the vents, the fan still spins when turned on and when it is turned on the air coming from the vents feels cool. I've removed the heatsinks, cleaned them, reapplied thermal paste... I've tried everything I can think of. I've read that updating the bios could help, but I can't get the machine to turn on long enough to do that.

I will say, the previous owner of the machine was a very heavy smoker, but I have cleaned the whole machine inside and out.

Is it possible that, even though the fan is spinning, the fan may be causing the error? It's the only thing I can think of, or is it possible that it could be a BIOS issue, and if that is indeed the case, how would I go about fixing it if the machine won't stay on for more than 60 seconds?

    :)

    Thermal Shutdown

    Hi,

It is normally a setting in the Bios that controls a Thermal Shutdown..

It may or may not allow a setting of temperature ranges for this to happen..

    Thermal Shutdown

I have been fairly excited about this upgrade. Though there seems to be some disappointment now that it is here. I have attempted to install it twice and have had a thermal shutdown both times. This is a laptop but I have never had a thermal problem before
and I game on this. I can only assume it is an issue with the upgrade. I would appreciate any support I can get for this from Microsoft.
