After much rummaging around I found a clock which meets my expectations. However, it's not free of charge. I've started a 30 days trial and if it meets my standards, I might well purchase it in the end. It displays day of week, date (without the year - although I don't know if that is just for the trial version) and time with running seconds. For interested users here is the link 1st Clock is a taskbar clock replacement with fully customizable clock display with multiple time zones, alarms, atomic time synchronization, popup calendar and more to 1st clock version 5.

On my wife's laptop we get a blank screen - just the pointer cursor, no limping dots - sometimes after clicking the lock screen away after booting; always when switching users. One time we waited 10 minutes before forcing a power off.

This coming weekend I'll do a clean reinstall to see if that fixes anything.

Have you don't a clean reinstall?

(I'm getting tired of asking that. I'm getting tired of being told that when I forget to suggest it to myself. How does the average non-techie handle being told "Oh, just reinstall the operating system and every program you've installed"? Sheesh!)

    Regarding the login problem:

Fast start-up: Try setting this off (mine's on here). A number of people have found this helps.

I note jdenhaer appears confused between Fast Startup and Hibernate. As you can see these are quite different settings- and of course very different functions.

Beyond that you can try these standard things:
    Run chkdsk C: \F

then if clear, from an elevated command prompt
    sfc /scannow

and if that fails an in-place upgrade repair install

    More details available.

Always use disk imaging so you have a working configuration you can restore. (Very much more quickly than the pain of a clean install).
Bad things can happen and almost certainly will- probably when it's most inconvenient. Be prepared.

    THANK You!! *Smile

This seems to have done the trick, but I had a bit of a problem to get it to start properly. There was an annoying API error message to start with, which I didn't get rid of until I had uninstalled all previous clocks, all left-over files from them and all registry entries. I really had to make a clean install of the T-Clock and I also made it compatible with Windows 7. Now it finally works and I have my nice, unobtrusive clock back in the tray with seconds, date including year and the day! Perfect!

    Things broken after Anniversary update

Anyone stuck in Selective Startup? I have a Surface Pro 4 that got stuck in Selective Startup after installing the Anniversary update two days ago. When you try to select Normal Startup in MSConfig it will not take the change. My wife's Dell Laptop started doing the same prior to installing the Anniversary Update as well. I have read in number places that this is normal, but I beg to differ.
