I actually loved 8.1 until I got my hands on Windows 10. *Smile

  2. I agree, the start menu is pretty cool and I love it better than Windows 7, in my opinion. *Smile

Really wish we could get a hybrid of the Windows 7 start menu with the live tiles that Windows 8/10 has.

  5. I use Stardock's Start 10 in favor of the new 10 version due to having the Modern without Metro tiles variant while the default for 10 leaves you staring at tiles. There was never anything wrong with the 7 Start except intended for 7.

8.1 was the "Some more progress has been made" go between stage from 8 to 10 and 10 is now where 8 should have been but MS pushed the unfinished form of dual platform OS out to keep the 2-3yr. new version schedule going that will no longer be the case. What that means is continued progress in making a working dual platform OS out of Windows as well as not simply stuffing Metro in your face turnoffs that made 8 a royal flop!

  6. Aren't the Apps you Pin to Start or the Taskbar your most used Apps?
Recent / Frequent Apps adds no value for me.

This was true on Win7 too - the top level of the start was equivalent to Pin to Start, the 2nd level was equivalent to recent / frequent and he right hand side were system applets and user folders, on the bottom there was all programs. Vista, Win7, Win8 and Win10 Start menus aren't much different operationally, only the presentation differs.

Sure, there are puch notifications now, but I turn off live tiles - they just annoy me ... if I want to know the weather, I look out the window *Biggrin

Between the most used Apps pinned to the Taskbar, the Quick Access Menu (WinKey+X), keybd shortcuts I rarely go to the Start menu - perhaps for most used Apps Pinned to Start that are used less often *Wink

Ah well, the Start menu will always be a topic for discussion.

I agree, then you could have your menu any way you like it. Except they could add a windows 8 view.

I'm probably the only one who hates the tiles and does whatever is necessary to keep from ever seeing one. Classic Shell is a huge help.

I always did whatever it took to stay away from anything resembling the very annoying Windows 7 Start menu.

Well yes I don't like the tiles. I use Classic Shell and I still use the quick launch tool bar. Right next to the quick launch tool bar I have an link to the original 10 startscreen, just incase I ever feel like checking out these live tiles. I did actually use one that I created for awhile "Gas Buddy" . Alas I finally decided its just as easy to check local gas prices with my phone and haven't used the startscreen since.

Why would they bother pay to buy something to deviate from their "vision" of a common interface across all devices - more to maintain etc.?

From their viewpoint, it adds no value (and I have to agree with that probable viewpoint).

The cost of buying it is next to nothing - you are lucky they allow you to use such tools - they could lock it down so it is not possible.

There is a W8 view, it's called Tablet mode but it's locked on desktops, all they have to do is to unlock it, no need to invent hot water again.

Go ahead, change it. I don't use it anyway, except to launch the Settings options. I keep everything else on Quick Access Popup and Blanch.

Its actually not locked on desktops. I have a desktop computer and I just tried Tablet Mode and it worked perfectly. Kind of funky.
