  3. Stardoxk's Start10 here! Initially I tried shrinking the Tile section down as far as possible but was still finding it would continue to take up too much desktop space each time the Start menu was opened plus wouldn't be using the tiles.

Those are geared primarily for touchscreen monitors and devices. Windows is now a dual platform OS where this is now the norm to expect. Classic Shell was tried out on 8 along with Start Menu 7 but 8 flopped and I decided to wait a few more versions for MS to get the act together and still went with Start10 being a 3rd party app featuring a look alike 10 menu with or without tiles.

You must have run something besides Windows back then maybe a Linux distro? 7 was the best put together and still in use here having a dual boot on two machines to cover the bases. The 7 Start menu was about the easiest and fully functional before 10 came along now seeing an updated for dual platform type menu.

The tiles for a convention desktop display simply don't work and the MS goof was not allowing an option to hide tiles when not using non touchscreen pc or devices. The Start 10 app takes care of all thar swiftly and preferred here over the previous 3rd party apps originally aimed at 8 and 8.1.

For full screen start you have to boot into the Tablet mode and remember to switch back to desktop in order to bring up the W8 style Metro in you face type touchscreen Metro tile loaded display most were initially appauled by! That was why 8 tanked on first sight when MS locked the boot into Metro while 8.1 was able to see boot to the desktop but still only Metro in you face for a Start menu. Stardock has made a fortunate thanks to the MS designs there!

  6. It's a bit different now then initially and over the last several months. With the most recent MS has worked on some of the feedback heard from desktop users about how to revise the Start menu. When going with Start10 however the most you would have seen at the time was how to shrink tiles down and not hide that section at all.

The screen here shows the original W7 Start menu behind the best shrinkage of the 10 menu with tiles showing without any option to hide by arrow. As for the Search option in plain view on 7 you now simply right click on the 10 Start button and select Search from the right click context menu of choices just as you might choose the Command prompt or Run command line options.

Call me old fashioned, but I like a start menu that gives me easy access to everything. I can set that up with Classic Shell.

I have use for tiles, I put most used programs in there, desktop as well as APPs. Aside from it's looks it's there so why not use it. Normal start menu I like much better than in W7 because they are automatically sorted and more visible. After hundred or more installed programs it is much easier to see and find than in W7.
Couple of things I would like to change are: Mouse over the Start button so it doesn't have to be clicked on and installed programs to show only shortcuts to executable files, no help and other non executable ones. Those can be cleaned up but it's same amount of work as in W7. If there are some folders shown in start menu, it would be nice to open at mouse over too, no clicking on it.
Tried to sell those ideas to MS but no takers yet.

  10. In 10 since late March everything in the default 10 menu is alphabetically organized. A, B, C, D, E,... while scrolling download until reaching the last few Windows sections to be followed only by anything X, Y, or ZDSoft as seen here. With Start10 on the other hand other then the items you see installed scroll down in order of progression according to installation.

Even with Start10's Modern with tiles you see the exact alphabetical layout in contrast to how 7's menu was and how the Modern without tiles is.

Or you could follow the MS trend and see this type of layout once you start adding new categories when the tiles start accumilating in frequency. Fortunately MS has added a few options to the updated form of Start menu to be seen with the RS1 Anniversary update which is now likely the 383 preview of since this latest build no longer sees a watermark!
