  1. Three tries to download and install Windows 10

    Ok,

After trying the upgrade from the Windows Update system which failed, per instructions above, I obtained the Media Creation Tool, downloaded the .iso and burned it to a DVD as an image. Today, ran the setup.exe on this DVD, which downloaded updates, checked the PC and started the install. Got to about 25% and then received a message that the install failed. No explanation or anything that would give me the slightest clue.

Also, through the initial setup, it never asked if I wanted to upgrade my existing 8.1 or do a clean install or a partition or anything that would tell me it is upgrading my existing OS, 8.1. When doing the initial install, does it automatically do an upgrade, after which when installing from the DVD, then ask these questions on the presumption that Microsoft then has my PC info on their servers so I do not then need my license key?

Anyway., as noted in my original post, looks again like I will be sticking with 8.1, as this Windows 10 upgrade is the worst piece of mis-management I have seen in my lifetime......

Yes, running setup.exe will automatically do an upgrade of the previous OS.

Do you have anything extra connected to USB ports when trying to do the upgrade?

  3. 2nd Try - stopped running: My Lamp (Apache and Mysql databases), Firewall (Norton) and backup software VisaVersa. Still failed at 24%

3rd try, - Had a blank USB stick and memory card reader with usb connection to my power backup. Removed all and still failed at 24%.

Have now attempted 6 upgrades, 3 via Windows update and 3 via DVD and all failed. Have spent 2 days trying to upgrade. Why doesn't Microsoft just list the 1,000 things that can make Windows 10 upgrade fail, so we can check them off and then do the upgrade, rather than trying one thing, attempt upgrade, trying another, attempt upgrade etc., taking about 1/2 hour each time.

    Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic.......

Try booting from the DVD instead of running setup from Windows.

    I have same problem
    can read my thread here
Error Code 8007003 in preparing to install - Windows 10 Forums

still have not found working solution.

re-downloaded and tried install with windows update like 15 times same result. Manually clearing files restarting WU service, using automatic troubleshooter to solve problems did not help.

used media creation tool re-downloaded 3 times tried to install 6 times all failure.
Last one broke windows 8.1 install on my tablet, now i can't boot.

I there may be problems with activation because if you want free upgrade you have to install by running setup from activated older version of windows (at least for the first time).
    Can anyone confirm this?

To thread starter can you post your disk manager screen shot I would like to see what partitions there is on your disk.

You can boot from the install media and upgrade your previous Windows installation.

You're misunderstanding the process of upgrading vs clean installation.
When you boot from a Windows installation media, it will detect if there is another OS present.
You should choose the Upgrade option.
If you choose a Custom Install, it will allow you to format your drive and start from scratch.

  9. After using my HP Assistant for my HP 714-200 Envy PC, and installing all updates including the latest BIOS (as suggested on the HP Forum), I tried to upgrade using the Windows upgrade process, and for the 4th time using this process it failed almost at the end of the preparing your PC.

Having 3 failures using setup.exe from my image burned DVD, I read here to try the boot with DVD. I tried that and after the first screen asking for language and such, the next screen had one option to install, Clicking that, the next screen asked for the product key, which I assume is not doing the upgrade which does not ask for the key. I assume since it is looking for a key, that it is doing a clean install, which you cannot do for free until you do the upgrade...... Again, these are my assumptions from everything I have read, at that is now almost a book......

So, after 7 tries to upgrade, 4 via Windows Upgrade and 3 via DVD from Windows, I give up again. If anyone has any "real" suggestions, instead of just "try this", it would be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea what your problem might be.

I have done the upgrade from 8.1 by mounting the .iso (8.1 does that natively). You won't need a DVD or a USB flash drive. The mounted .iso appears in Windows as a DVD. Launch setup.exe from within that, and the upgrade proceeds. No keys, and not many choices. I believe that you have to keep all your files and applications for the Win 10 upgrade to activate.

If you have the right .iso (home vs. pro, 32 bit vs. 64), you won't be asked for a key. (You won't receive one, either.)

That is precisely what I did for an upgrade. You seem to be doing some unnecessary stuff, although that also should work.

You'd probably be OK if you did a fresh install of 8.1 and activated it, and then upgraded to 10. (You need not download the updates to 8.1) You may not want to do that, of course.

The problem is that he has something wrong with his current operating system that is keeping the Windows 10 upgrade from succeeding. He's started the upgrade correctly in the past - there is something on his computer keeping it from completing.

Did clean reinstall of windows 8.1 (fresh media from MS ISO file) on failing system removed all the OEM and other partitions (did Macrium disk image before).
Upgrade to Windows 10 icon appeared but it still says that i have to wait. So I will wait and see if Upgrade completes that means there was something wrong with my windows install.

If you already have the Windows 10 .iso on hand, I recommend using it.

The version will be the same as the online upgrade.

  14. I had no idea on how to mount an iso in Windows 8.1, so I tried right clicking and found 2 options that apparently provide being able to install directly from the .iso in Windows:
    1. Mount as Virtual Drive
    2. View Disc Image
I clicked on (2.) and saw all of the files that appear when burned as an image on a DVD, including the setup.exe. I assume this is the mount option you refer to, which I will try??

It most likely will not work either, as the DVD failed 3 times already with the same files, but at least I learned something about being able to install from the iso file directly off the hard drive.

    Option #1.

You'll see a new (virtual) DVD drive appear in Windows Explorer. Run setup.exe from that.
