Thunderbolt 3 Device Gone After Window Update BIOS?

I have consistent unhappy results where installed PCIe Thunderbolt 3 cards disappear from Device Manager after install of a Windows Update. I maintain the updates as they come out and for discussion sake this has happened for each update release in 2020.

I run 1909 on a set of machines. After much frustration I figured out that if I wipe the BIOS/NVRAM by reinstalling the BIOS, reset my BIOS parms and restart, the Thunderbolt devices are back.

Another bad behavior noted across all Win 10 machines with TB3 connected to a TB3 dock, e.g TBT3-UDV, you can never get a display HDMI output from the dock when connected to the Win 10 box. If I simply disconnect the TB3 cable from the Win 10 box to the dock and connect the dock to a MacBook the display appears immediately upon cable connection.

    Anyone Else with this experience?

  2. thunderbolt 3 to displayport adapter

    Hi John,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that inconvenience you are facing when the things may not work as expected.

    1. What is the make and model of the computer?

When the Thunderbolt 3 is used with certain eighth generation Intel processor-based Windows 10 systems, there is a possibility that the two USB 3.0 ports on the back of the dock (closest to the Ethernet port)
may not be recognized properly by the operating system.

However, I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below and let us know if that helps.

    1. Disconnect the pluggable Thunderbolt 3 dock from the system and remove its power cable to turn off completely.
    2. Uninstall the Intel ‘Thunderbolt Software’ present on your system via the Control Panel ->
Programs and Features and restart the device once.
    3. Download and install the latest version of the Intel Thunderbolt Software published by your system manufacturer. If you are unable to obtain this download from your system manufacturer, you can download a version directly from Intel
      here -> https://downloadcenter.intel.com/do...-Driver-for-Intel-NUC-Kit-NUC8i7HNK-NUC8i7HVK
    4. Restart the system once again.
    5. Reconnect the power cable to the pluggable Thunderbolt 3 dock, and then reconnect the Thunderbolt 3 cable from the dock to your system.
    6. You should be prompted to authenticate/approve the dock. Follow the onscreen prompts for the completion of the process and check the status of the issue.

If the issue still persists I suggest you to get in touch with the
Thunderbolt support for the further assistance.

    Hope it helps.

Windows 10 is not recognizing a Thunderbolt 2 device

Hey all, I was having this problem too and finally figured it out. This fix could apply to anyone with a Gigabyte Thunderbolt 3 certified motherboard, it will solve "Billboard Device" errors including "error 10":

On the Gigabyte website we are instructed to download and install a firmware update to upgrade to Thunderbolt 3 capability (Utility | Service / Support - GIGABYTE Global). The instructions say:

"Please follow the steps instructed after executing Thunderbolt FW Update Tool, remove the system power cord for at least 30 seconds after FW update. Thunderbolt function will be available after system powers on."

The problem is the wording in these instructions, what it SHOULD say is this:

    1) Download the zip file and decompress it.

    2) Run the setup file and install the program (this will take 2-3 minutes and will have several steps)

Note: it appears a lot of people (including me) stopped here and assumed the update was complete, however, this is not the case!

    3) After the program has finished installing go to C:\program files (x86)\GIGABYTE\flashTBT and run the file "flashTBT_100.exe". This program will flash the BIOS and upgrade it to Thunderbolt 3 capability.

So yeah, that's it! Everything is working great now. It's a really simple fix, but until Gigabyte updates the wording in their instructions I suspect people are going to continue to have this problem.

Thunderbolt 3 not able to display?

Thanks for the response. There is a possibility that your computer doesn't support the new features for your Thunderbolt 3 cable. To resolve the issue, please perform the troubleshooting steps found on this

  5. Thanks for all the replies.
My scenario is different - Gigabyte Alpine Ridge is installed and works. After MS Update it does not work because Windows does not recognize the device and upon inspection in bios , the bios also does not see the TB3 hardware. Flashing the BIOS fixes the issue. This implicates the update process in changing variables in the BIOS.

For this I would like to hear feedback from MS Engineering, perhaps UEFI developers.
